Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind has officially opened in EPCOT!
Disney shared several weeks ago that Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will (at least for now) will not offer a standby line, and will instead require guests to obtain a boarding group via a virtual queue in order to ride. In addition to a virtual queue, Cosmic Rewind will also be available as an Individual Lightning Lane selection (or pay-per-ride selection) via Disney Genie.
All Disney World guests can try to join the virtual queue for Cosmic Rewind at 7AM, and then again at 1PM. The virtual queue will also open again at 6PM on select nights for Disney World hotel guests that are eligible for Extended Evening Hours. Extended Evening Hours are essentially the replacement for Extra Magic Hours where select Disney World hotel guests are able to stay in the parks after they have closed to the other guests.
Once you have secured a space in the virtual queue, you will be given a boarding group, and an estimated amount of time until you will be able to get on the ride. You are only able to join the virtual queue for a ride once per day, so if you are able to successfully able to join at 7AM, you are not able to join again at 1PM.
When it comes to Individual Lightning Lanes, Disney World hotel guests are eligible to purchase and reserve a time beginning at 7AM the morning of their visit to the park. All other guests are able to purchase Individual Lightning Lane reservations when the park where the ride is located opens. So for example, if you want to purchase an Individual Lightning Lane for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, non-Disney World hotel guests can make that purchase when EPCOT opens.
You can also only purchase one Individual Lightning Lane for an attraction per park per day, and only two Individual Lightning Lane selections each day, no matter the attraction. With all that information, it would seem like you can only ride Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind once per day, but is that true?
There might be a way to ride Cosmic Rewind twice! If you can secure a boarding group for the ride, and also purchase an Individual Lightning Lane for the ride, it stands to reason that you could ride it twice: once with your boarding group, and once with your Lightning Lane!
We were wondering if this would work, so we stopped by Guest Relations in EPCOT, and asked! There, a Cast Member told us that theoretically, this would work! A guest could ride the coaster twice, once with the virtual queue, and once with their Lightning Lane.
We saw this in action with Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, which also opened with a virtual queue and as an Individual Lightning lane offering. We had success riding twice in one day by using the virtual queue and purchasing a Lightning Lane, so it makes sense that the same would be true for Cosmic Rewind!

Be Kind says
It is true and technically it will work. However, if everything operations perfectly, the ride can accommodate ~1,800 per hour. On a perfect, 12-day, 21,600 guests could ride Guardians (again, that would be under the most ideal settings) which is less than park capacity and far less when you consider all the park hopping that occurs. Each person that rides it twice is bumping out someone that came on vacation to ride it and didn’t get the chance.
Again, it is possible but would it be fair to all the other people that wanted to ride it and it might be their only chance?
Joe B says
We are day visitors, passholders, from the area. Now we need a reservation for the park so we can get up at the crack of dawn to try for the 7AM contest and if we don’t get it and DO go to the park and try at 1 PM and don’t get it and try again at 6 PM and don’t get it.
Just put back the standby lane and we’ll take our chances. It works at Ratatouille. It works at Rise. It will work at Galaxy.
For I, as a years-long passholder, have NO intention of purchasing my way onto the ride.

My Fiancé and I rode it twice this past Saturday. We got the virtual queue and then I turned around and bought the lightning Lane for it. It can be done.
Michelle says
Or perhaps don’t be selfish and only ride once a day since so many people are not getting to ride at all.
JF says
I confirm, I did it twice the way you described it.
Ross says
This doesn’t work (as of last week). I purchased lightening lane and when trying to join virtual queue it showed “not eligible” for the day.
Heather says
So to ride twice, do you need part of your group to try for the LL and part to try for the virtual queue?
Xav says
Riding twice a ride that just open is SO selfish IMHO…
Shari says
Yes, you can do this and ride it twice. My family did this today. We had one person making the virtual queue selection for Cosmic Rewind, another doing the paid Lightning Lane for Cosmic Rewind and another person making a Genie+ selection. Got all three for times before noon. We were able to ride it twice and even got different songs on each ride!

If you have extra evening hours could you in theory ride it 3 times? I figure so much will change by our late Nov-Dec trip but am curious if we can do the 6:00 sign up if we already did one of the earlier ones? Last year on the late nights for Remy we could just ride it over and over again which is what I really hope happens by our trip time!
Kelly Dill says
If you join a boarding group at 7 am, could you join again at 6pm if you are eligible for the extra evening hours?
Erin says
We were at Epcot yesterday (May 30) and rode it twice. Virtual queue # 56 ( called back at 1:05). Purchased Lightening Lane for 4:30 so it definitely works!
TruthBeTold says
I don’t recommend this ride if you get motion sick easily!!
DFB Gigi says
Hi Kelly! Yes, if you have the extended evening perk you can join the virtual queue at 7am or 1pm then again at 6pm so you’re able to ride it twice if you get in the queue both times. 🙂
DFB Gigi says
Hi Teresa! You would be able to ride it thrice if you have the extended evening hours perk. You could queue once at 7am OR 1pm and then again at 6pm, plus you can also try to purchase the Individual Access Selection, so in theory you could ride 3 times. 🙂
DFB Gigi says
Hi Heather! Yes, or if you have the extended evening hours perk for deluxe resort guests you can also queue again at 6pm so there’s a chance to ride it 3 times in one day if all of that falls into place.
Donald S says
Pft. Nine times in one day.
Of course, it was the D23 preview day, but considering the cost per person ($35) included a $20 gift card for food, it still came to less than the IA price to ride it…
…Nine times…
… in just over five hours. Would have been more, but we took a 90-minute break for empanadas and margaritas.
One of the few times D23 actually justified its cost. Also, it made sure it’s no big deal not going anywhere near the ride (and those crowds) for the foreseeable future.
Ras says
I wish when they have D23 preview days they would open it up to more people/slots per day. I have nothing against you getting to ride multiple times, but was bummed when I was actually going to be there during the preview days, tried asap as a D23 Gold member, and all the slots were filled immediately. Being an out of state pass holder, it’s seldom I happen to be there during thieve special events. Just wish they could have had more slots. But, not to worry, I’ll try again in September.
Bruce Wagner says
Hello DFB. I have a question about the Orange Bird annual pass Magnet We are not coming until Aug 22 do you think they will still be giving them out?
F says
Yeah…so, you’re TOLD if you stay at a deluxe resort you can join the queue , again, after 6pm. Not entirely true. We were told by guest relations that if you’ve ridden once, you’re automatically deprioritized for the queue as we were kicked out of the app. No remorse on their part. Slits gone in 3 seconds. No joke. Not that we’re selfish… but they just shouldn’t TELL you have the opportunity when you don’t. Should have a disclaimer. Staying does not always have privileges. 🙁
