Bob Chapek, the CEO of Disney, has been at the center of a lot of news lately.
In the past few months, Chapek has been involved in the controversy surrounding Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Bill, which critics have called the “Don’t Say Gay Bill”, a decrease in Disney’s stock value, and the firing of a top Disney executive. However, it seems that CEO Bob Chapek isn’t going anywhere in the near future.
According to Business Insider, the Walt Disney Company Board will likely renew Bob Chapek’s contract as CEO. His current contract was set to end in February 2023, but following a statement of support after the firing of Peter Rice, one Disney higher-up thinks that Chapek’s contract will be renewed.
The Disney Board is scheduled to have meetings in June and September, and one of these meetings is likely when Chapek’s contract will be discussed.
This comes immediately after the firing of Disney TV Executive, Peter Rice, due to “an ill fit with Disney’s corporate culture.” Rice was part of the Disney General Entertainment Content, which helped create over 300 shows for Disney’s various platforms, including ABC, Disney+, Hulu, and more.
Recently, Disney executives commented on how inflation is impacting the theme parks. We also recently heard from Chapek about the Park Pass Reservation system — you can click here to see what he had to say about the system.
We’ll keep you updated on all the latest Disney news, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
Gino says
BIG mistake if they renew his contract. Disney will continue its downward spiral under his “leadership”.
April says
That’s bad news.
Laurel Lane says
They’ve got to be kidding. If this man’s contract is renewed… Can anyone provide addresses that we can write and complain to? Just the thought of more years of Chapek makes me ill.
Carolyn says
Extremely disappointing news!!!!!!
Jerry Koenig says
I think Chapek has been blamed for way too many things Disney regulars are upset about it, but at the same time I don’t feel he has helped to make all the Disney guests feel like the Magic is the same at the Disney Parks. I do think he needs to consider the skyrocketing costs, which is getting to the point soon that just regular middle-class families with a couple of kids will feel it’s too expensive for a family to visit Disney. I know a lot of people will complain about the costs, but they still will go anyway. Lastly, the way Disney is trying to control costs for prime attractions and how to set times when you can ride is just not as good as the old Fast Pass days. They changed the original Fast Passes a little and it wasn’t nearly as efficient as the original Fast Passes. Pretty soon Disney is going to start to sell tickets to each attraction, charging for these big attractions is just Wrong in my opinion. As long as it is working for Disney and the public goes along with it, I don’t expect to see it change.
Tom M says
That is unfortunate. As a shareholder I voted against his being on the Board.
Sundogg says
All the shareholders on this comment board need to return their proxy ballots. It’s probably not enough to change anything but based on the comments very few of us seem enthralled with Mr. Chapek or the general direction Disney is headed. PLEASE, return your ballots, it is on of few opportunities to let our voices be heard. The other is simply don’t go to Disney, but I know that will never happen.
Rob says
We’ll this blows for all guest and fans. I can only imagine how he going to make things even worse if they keep him on.
Ken says
Ditto…ditto….ditto….ditto and ditto. I agree across the board, but I have to wonder, does anyone at the home office ever read this feedback, or is it like Biden, don’t tell the higher up anything…. Does he know how little he is liked or respected…
SML says
Does The Disney Corp. not read anything the people write? Are they totally unaware of how people feel? Disney’s reputation and fan base are at an all time low. Sure people are still surging to their parks despite every poor choice that has been made in the last two years, but they are grumbling and going broke doing it. The fact that we keep coming is a tribute to Walt and his dream. A dream we all shared and treasured and just can’t let go of. Wane up Disney! Don’t renew this contract OR if you do, creat some goals for this man and make him bring back the magic he has destroyed. A little pixie dust could go a long way at this time in our lives. Would it be such a stretch to bring back free Magic Bands and the Magical Express and get rid of this horrific reservation system… at least pretend that you want us to have a magical trip.
Carol says
We voted against him, too. The powers that be are nuts.
NJ says
If Chapek remains, I’m officially done with Disney. He’s done nothing good for Disney and has systematically destroyed the magic. And he will continue to do so. Firing his likely replacement shows how petty, and self serving Chapek actually is.
Nese says
Oh heavens no…. Very sad to hear… maybe he should go back to being a cast member so he can see the mess created with less staffing … overwhelming changes in policies and procedures… And stay in his position and out of politics
Jim S. says
Maybe bring back Eisner. He wasn’t perfect and stayed too long. But, he rescued the Walt Disney Co. once, maybe again. If Disney Common hits $85.00, a new 5 year low, maybe the Board of Directors will wake up.
Becky says
Say it isn’t so! I feel the major changes at WDW ARE Capek’s doing. I can’t speak for Disneyland. A “vacation” to Disney is now wrought with rushing, competition & anxiety! I’m done
Tony D says
I voted against all current board members! If enough of us do that MAYBE they will get the idea that we are unhappy with the way the company is being MISMANAGED!
Mike M. says
Disappointing. Nothing has gotten better under his watch. Profits have gone up, yes, but shareholder value has not. Value for your dollar has gone down, park cleanliness and repair is worse, feeling of “magic” is disappearing. All his fault? Maybe not, but he is in charge so he owns it. He is alienating Disneys most loyal fans.
Mark H says
He should go. Is there a constituency he hasn’t alienated? Disney fans are very unhappy due to park related decisions and pricing. He managed to make a big part of his employee base mad, and then tried to solve it in a way that made a lot of the public angry and shaking their heads. In doing so he started a feud with the governor of the state that is home of their flagship park and cost them the ability to freely manage their land in Florida. If all of that isn’t enough he has presided over a huge decline in stock value.
Findor says
This is a bad idea all round. It shouldn’t be renewed. As well all kw the company has lost site of the guests and they are all about the all mighty dollar
Carolyn R Turnbull says
This is horrible news. Chapek will be downfall of Disney.
Lisa P says
They’re probably all buddies on the board so they pat each other’s backs.
Bob says
The only reason the board released that statement is to keep the stock from plummeting further. It means nothing at this point.
Susan Stickle says
Extremely disappointing. I am a shareholder and have been out priced of the magic at Disney. So sad. Would love to know who to write to and express how disappointing this is. Will take vacations elsewhere until Disney is like it used to be. Just saw the price increases for 2023. These people are out of their minds to think a regular family of 4 can afford this.
Maryellen says
My husband and I make a VERY good income…. We have been DVC MEMBERS for 6 moths shy of 25 years. We are getting priced out. No way that all of this is entirely his fault but he definitely has not helped . We likely will be going every 3 years vs the 2-3 times per year in the past. With everything else rising sharply in price a family vacation to the world is just no longer justifiable. The price was always high but you could justify but getting more for your money there vs other vacations. That is no longer the case.
Mike says
Under Chapeck’s Charge, Disney has Been Destroyed, they need to return to pre-chapeck operation model.
Don Glover says
“Disney CEO Bob Chapek Likely to Renew Contract Soon”
🙁 🙁 🙁
Rich says
Have these people looked at the stock price?
Manabear says
I don’t think Chapek is a good fit for the Disney Corporate culture!!! I can’t think of one good thing he has done in his tenure as CEO. All he care about is the bottom line – he has no vision of the Ealt Disney legacy. Big mistake to keep him as the j head of the company. Hopefully the board is just trying to keep it together by their statement of confidence. Perhaps they are just putting on a brave face. If they listen to their guests, cast members and investors they will step away from him asap!!!!
Eric says
Nothing will change until tourists start voting with their dollars.
Sharon says
Be gone !!!
Elizabeth says
Can’t the board see how the reputation of Disney and guest satisfaction are down and it feels like the parks only for the rich? The stock went under $100 a share Friday so their stock is down significantly under Chapek. The magic is gone and yes, whether he is directly to blame or not, its happened under his watch so he is to blame. The firing of any executive rumored to be his replacement makes him look childish and petty, further contributing to the negative impression every Disney fan seems to have of him to some degree.
AD says
This is horrible news! He’s sucked every bit of magic there was out of Disney World and Disneyland. AND got the Reedy Creak governing district revoked in Florida. If that didn’t get rid of him, nothing will. 😢
Kathi says
This man needs to go! Most of his people have terrible attitudes the World needs major improvement! I knew I would be spending alot for once in a lifetime trip but it was totally NOT worth it! Sorry Jerry he needs to go! The ruin falls on him and him alone!
Ann says
Please chuck Chapek! Please!
We won’t be back until he’s gone. Disney’s reputation is tanking!
Disney’s guests are angry at he policies he has made. Vacations are no longer fun. Park guests are unhappy, unsettled, & striking out at others in the parks, at both cast members and other guests. Pretty soon people will be afraid to go to Disney parks. People will be afraid to work there too. What happened to the fun? What happened to the magic!
Chapek killed it. Don’t let him destroy the entire Disney organization as well.
Tink says
As a Disney shareholder. I say ‘fire him’
He has done nothing positive for Disney. Shareholders were not consulted. Do not renew his contract!
Scott says
This is extremely disappointing. People are going to the parks today because they were cooped up because of COVID, they’re finally getting away, and Disney is the place to go now. If COVID begins to fade away but prices continue to rise (like outrageous merchandise prices) and poor decision making practices from Bob Chapek, people who have already visited the parks will rethink if they should go again or not, particularly those with family values.
Steve says
I’ve defended Chapek in the past; most of the complaints about him within the DFB forum have obviously been theme-park based. And many of those complaints centered on minutiae well-outside immediate control of the CEO.
HOWEVER, as CEO, his primary duty is to keep his shareholders happy. And the Disney stock price has PLUMMETED under his leadership. It is now below $100 per share! How can anyone with a fiduciary duty to their shareholders seriously consider renewing this man’s contract? The Board of Directors needs to look for alternative leadership ASAP.
Lu says
Sometimes plans are different than early announcements. Has happened in other companies. Wait and see what will happen.
Jeffrey says
As a shareholder, I voted against him. I feel if they renew his contract, Disney will continue to make bad decisions as far as costumer service is concerned. You can’t keep taking perks away from the costumes, that were already in the price of admission, and then making the costumer pay extra to get them back. Yes, people will still go, but the enjoyment may not be like it used too, and eventually they will stop coming. Will Disney care? I have no idea. They are losing sight of what Disney wanted. He wanted a place where families can go and have fun together. Disney is slowly out pricing the family environment, and turning it into a not so family friendly place. And with all that being said, I think Bob is leading them down the rabbit hole….
Kate says
More proof that Disney only cares about it’s stockholders, not it’s customers. This will not improve if people complain, but still go to the parks. Our complaints don’t hurt their bottom line. Only decreased business can do that. I was a regular customer for 30 years. I will not be returning.
Kevin says
You got to be kidding .this guy toke the happy out of going to Disney world get rid of him
GBush says
Chapek’s leadership is making Disney rich beyond it’s wildest dreams, and at the same time making me resent and despise anything Disney does that is new. I never dreamed there would be so much to dislike. The shine has worn off. Walt is rolling over in his grave. How could something so perfect become so frustrating… Sure the money mongers will keep him.
Christine says
This is a huge mistake.
David says
Maybe it time to return to old days of ticket books!
With A B C D and E tickets…E tickets being for the very best rides . And you only got a couple of those in you book…..you had to buy extras.
Who remembers those ???
🙂
Greg says
I’m sure this will be screened but I hope this is one of those head coach “Vote of Confidence” things sometimes floated as a trial balloon or because the board is actually searching for a successor and they aren’t quite ready to announce it.
Stacey Martella-Ferris says
SUCH a bad idea Disney. I guess the almost million signatures on the petition to fire chapek weren’t enough of a hint that he needs to go.
Sam Munnell says
That guy seriously needs to go. The whole Disney Experience has been ruined since he’s been in charge. Absolutely no magic in Disney and all about corporate greed. I would also love to have a way to email someone about this.
Vicki says
This is bad news for families. I used to love taking my family to Disney world. But the magic is gone unfortunately it is already too expensive for middle class in general. And the complexity of planning, reserving which individual park to visit daily, ride reservations, restaurant reservations paying extra for everything has made it a job not a Vacation. Stay out of politics and go back to Walt Disney’s original vision for the parks.
Iris Wright says
I’m of the opinion that Disney needs to move on from Chapek. There have been many changes at Disney and from where I sit, none were necessarily for the good.
Pat Jackson says
I along with many others have waited patiently for Bob Chapek to be gone. I’ve been to disney so many times over the past 30+ years. While there, there were people from every ethnic group, lifestyle and age and never once did I see anyone mistreated. Everyone was kind to others and it was a place where everyone could feel loved and welcomed. Now that Chapek has drug politics into a once beautiful place, I no longer feel welcome. I had reservations in November for a week with my best friend. Perfect room with fireworks view. We were counting the days to get there. But with Chapek’s new agenda we have canceled everything. I won’t even attempt to go back until he’s gone. And for one who loved Disney for so many years, it’s heartbreaking.
