It certainly seems like there’s always something changing in Disney World! Whether it’s new merchandise, construction, or new food items, there’s almost always something new to see or do.

One of our favorite changes is when there are new food items, or a restaurant gets an updated menu, because that means we get to try new food! Today, we’re heading to Plaza Restaurant at the Magic Kingdom to try a brand new sandwich!

Atmosphere

The Plaza Restaurant is located on the far end of Main Street, U.S.A., by the Main Street Ice Cream Parlor. It has views of Cinderella Castle and the building has lots of charm.

Inside, the restaurant is on the smaller side, but it has huge windows on one side of the dining room and mirrors on the other to make the room appear bigger.

The charm from the outside is carried over into the decor on the inside with lots of turn-of-the-century charm, plus a great view of Cinderella Castle.

But, let’s get into the reason we’re really here: the food!

Eats

We sat down at our table at the Plaza Restaurant and accessed the menu through a QR code. We started off with a drink, and chose the Sangria, which is Kunde Sauvignon Blanc with pineapple juice, spice, and fruit. We thought this drink was very refreshing and sweet without being too sweet and also not too boozy, which we liked.

We would recommend it if you’re a fan of white sangrias, but fans of red sangria might not like it as much. It’s $11.

For our appetizer, we had the Plaza Loaded Fries, which are crispy fries, melted cheddar, house-made bacon, green onion, and spicy sour cream.

Crispy fries, cheese, bacon, what’s not to love? We really enjoyed this appetizer and loved the sour cream on top. It’s a perfect shareable appetizer, and is definitely too big for one person.

The Loaded Plaza Fries were $13.

Our entree was what we came here all along for. In the beginning of June, Disney added a reuben sandwich to the menu here (at the time called the Knickerbocker Sandwich, but the name was then changed to The Plaza Reuben). The sandwich is a traditional reuben featuring corned beef on marble rye bread with Thousand Island Dressing, Swiss, and sauerkraut. 

The reuben comes with a side of fries, but because we had eaten fries as our appetizer, we substituted in mashed potatoes instead. As for the taste, it was a very good reuben! Reubens often end up being overly salty, and we were pleased to find that this one wasn’t. The meat was cooked well and was balanced out by the sauerkraut and the Thousand Island. We also really liked the bread, but wished that the sandwich has more of the dressing.

We also really liked the mashed potatoes. They did have the potato skin left on, so be aware of that if you’re not a fan of mashed potato with the skin, but we really liked it. Neither the reuben nor the mashed potatoes were really standout in any way, but they were good, solid items. While we liked the reuben, we preferred the Monte Cristo sandwich, which has been taken off the menu. The reuben was $20.

And finally, we come to our dessert. We decided to give the Omnibus Sundae a go, which is chocolate and vanilla ice cream topped with hot fudge, raspberry sauce, chocolate sauce, candied walnuts, whipped cream, and a cherry. 

We liked this sundae and thought it was pretty standard. For $9, it was a pretty decent size, but it’s hard to get all of the flavors in one bite, and you kind of end up having to eat it layer by layer. We would probably skip this dessert, and opt for something else on the menu (like the 50th Anniversary Sundae — but only if you’re with a group), or just stop next door at the Ice Cream Parlor for a scoop.

Nosh or Not

Head to the Plaza Restaurant if…

• You’re looking for standard, classic foods that will appeal to everyone in your group.
• You’re wanting to have lunch or dinner with a great view of Cinderella Castle.
• In-your-face theming isn’t high on your list of requirements for a restaurant.

Skip the Plaza Restaurant if…

• You’re looking for more varied menu items.
• You want to eat in a more unique environment.

Overall

Overall, the Plaza Restaurant remains a solid choice for a meal in Magic Kingdom. It’s a relatively inexpensive table service choice and you get views of Cinderella Castle, which can make this restaurant a good spot for groups visiting Disney World for the first time. The menu is very basic, with sandwiches, salads, and other classic fares, so if you’re looking for something more adventurous, this might not be your favorite place.

While the restaurant is very beautiful and charming, it doesn’t have a ton of theming, so if you’re looking for a highly themed restaurant, you might want to look at other options. In the Magic Kingdom, Skipper Canteen is a very well-themed restaurant with more unique menu items, as well. We liked everything we ate, but weren’t blown away by anything (and we’re still wishing the Monte Cristo would come back).
