Are you ready? Are you sure?! We hope you brought your appetites!
It’s the 2022 EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival and we’re making our way around the world to show you what this year’s festival has in store. Between every single menu for ALL of the booths and every single Eat to the Beat concert you might catch, we’re bringing it all to you! And now, it’s time to experience a BRAND NEW Festival Booth — The Fry Basket. Is this new booth worth a visit, or should you pass on by? Let’s find out!
Menu
This booth is BRAND NEW this year, and we’re so excited to try it. Over at The Fry Basket, you’ll find a variety of items — but as you might have guessed, this booth serves quite a few different versions of fries!
Think fries are boring? Think again! You can get Adobo Yuca Fries with Garlic-Cilantro Aïoli, and they even have a Fry Flight with Salt and Malt Vinegar Fries, Barbecued Bacon Fries with Smoked Aïoli, and Sweet Potato Casserole Fries.
To drink, this spot has a Salty Dog Cocktail and an 81Bay Brewing Co. Key Lime Lager. Now that we’ve taken a look at the menu, let’s dive into the food itself!
Eats
First up, we grabbed the Adobo Yuca Fries with Garlic-Cilantro Aïoli for $5.50. Instead of a plain ol’ potato, these fries are made from yuca with smokey seasonings and served with a creamy sauce.
These fries were our favorite thing at this booth! Although the Fry Flight looks more exciting, the flavor and texture of these Yuca fries CAN NOT be beaten. They basically tasted like Texas toast garlic bread in french fry form. They were perfectly crunchy, and that creamy sauce added a lot of tangy flavor. We think even people who aren’t fans of the Yuca flavor will enjoy these — although you can tell that these aren’t made with potatoes, the texture wasn’t too unfamiliar.
Next on our list, we had to try the Fry Flight! This comes with three different types of french fries for $7.50 total. You’ll get Sea Salt and Malt Vinegar Fries, Barbecued Bacon Fries with Smoked Aïoli, and Sweet Potato Casserole Fries with candied pecans, toasted marshmallow cream, and caramel whisky.
We thought the Salt and Vinegar Fries were a little bit lacking in flavor. They were pretty crispy, and they had a lot of salt on top, but the seasoning wasn’t very well distributed so some fries were much saltier than others. We were hoping for more vinegar flavor on these as well! The Barbecued Bacon Fries tasted a lot like barbecue chips. The seasoning was very similar to a barbecue chip flavor rather than a sauce. Although we usually love aïoli, this particular sauce was very mayonnaise-forward, so anyone who doesn’t love mayo will probably want to pass on these. We could taste a bit of the smokey flavor, but not much.
The Sweet Potato Fries were our favorite in this flight! They tasted like dessert without being too sweet. It really was like eating sweet potato casserole! The fries were pretty soggy — they weren’t crisp, but they also didn’t fall apart when we picked them up. The marshmallow, pecans, and cinnamon all added great flavors.
All these fries were making us thirsty, so we had to grab a drink of course.
Drinks
As far as drink options go at this booth, there is one cocktail and one beer! First up, we tried the Salty Dog Cocktail. This is made with Boyd & Blair Vodka with grapefruit juice, ginger, simple syrup, and lime with a salted rim for $11. It sounds like a mix between a Greyhound and a Moscow Mule — let’s see how it tastes! This drink was very vodka-forward, although you could definitely taste the grapefruit as well. We didn’t taste a lot of ginger, although there seemed to be a subtle kick from that flavor. We’d recommend this for anyone who really enjoys vodka drinks.
If you’re not one for cocktails, you can also grab the 81Bay Brewing Co. Key Lime Lager, which costs $6 for a 6oz pour and $9 for a 12oz pour. This lager is brewed with key lime for a refreshing, citrusy flavor.
We thought this was a very tasty lager. You can definitely taste the lime in it, and it’s light and refreshing. If you’re not a big beer drinker, that key lime taste is probably not quite enough to make you love this. But for anyone who enjoys unique beer flavors, we recommend this!
Overall
So, did this year’s NEW Festival Booth pass the DFB test? In general, we think it did! Those Yuca fries were very delicious, and you can bet we’ll be back for more. The Fry Flight was a bit disappointing in some ways, but it was still fun to try out all the different flavors. And we think that a lot of people will enjoy the Key Lime Lager as well!
