There have been some big announcements during the Walt Disney Company’s Q3 earnings call.
So far, we’ve learned that Disney Parks revenue has increased by $4.3 billion, Disney+ subscribers have risen, and the new ad-supported Disney+ subscription tier is launching this December. Details about Disney Genie+ have also been shared, and we have an update that may surprise you!
Have you ever wondered how many people are actually purchasing Genie+ in Disney World and Disneyland? During the Q1 earnings call, Disney reported that over a third of domestic guests purchased Genie+ and/or Individual Lightning Lanes in the first quarter of the year.
During the Q3 earnings call, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek reported that almost 50% of guests entering Disney Parks purchased Genie+ in the third quarter. Chapek said, “Even our Genie product, which we released short of a year ago, now about 50% of the people who come through the gate, buy up to that Genie product…which you can see in results of our yields.”
The Walt Disney Company previously reported that over 50% of guests purchased Genie+ products during the holiday season in 2021, and now as of the third quarter, it appears to be a trend.
In Disney World, Genie+ costs $15 per person, per day, while it costs $20 per person, per day in Disneyland. A Genie+ purchase gets you access to the faster Lightning Lanes (as opposed to standby lanes) for select rides, while the most popular and in-demand ride Lightning Lanes can be purchased in a separate transaction via Individual Lightning Lanes, and prices vary depending on the date.

I wonder if the obvious is staring Disney in the face. Could it be that there is a very large percentage of those guests who purchased genie did no because this is their last hurrah and do not expect to be returning on their usual 1 year, 2 year or year visit. I know I might pay to do the attractions one last time before I am done with visiting. It is just getting too expensive.

Genie plus has value only if few people use it and if you plan to stay on your phone all day and focus all your attention on rides. The 3 free fast passes per day was a good system. Just like everything else at Disney it’s gone down hill with the new greedy CEO.

I wonder if this is true or just propaganda to drive up sales.
No, the Disney execs wouldn’t lie to us ….. right?

one word “GREED”

And those people are the problem. I interacted with some folks in the parks today that had never been. They were talking about trying to work with the Genie + App and asking me questions. I me tion in passing, “Back when it was free last year…” they said “Wait What?!?” So most people don’t even know.

We bought it, but when it was possible to buy it for your whole stay at a discounted price. Now that has gone I don’t think as many will buy it.

I used Genie Plus back when I took my family (Wife and I, 2 kids, 8 & 7 years old) in May, and I thought it worked great. On our Magic Kingdom day, it probably saved us between 3 hours of line waiting (that includes shaving off about 1/3 of the posted standby line time when we hit the lightning lane, Yes, I believe the posted times are bloated). I feel that was totally worth the cost. Is spending $60 plus tax to ride Rise of the Resistance a pricey consideration? Yes, but to save me and my family a 2 hour wait (Posted time, plus it was down most of that morning), it was absolutely worth it. This (and buying a lightsaber) was the only thing that “daddy” wanted to do while we were here, so this was a priority for me.
We are not going to be a “go every year” family (this was my first trip since the early 2000’s, and first as a dad), probably won’t go again for another 4-5 years, so I wanted to make our trip as worthwhile as possible.
As for being on the phone all day, I did not feel that way, every once in a while refreshing times is not “being on my phone all day”, and once you have a ride booked, outside of the 120 minute rule, there isn’t much need to be on the app. And guess what, don’t know if you folks notice, but people are on their phones way too much as it is these days anyway, whether they’re at a restaurant with their family, staring at their phones and not communicating with each other, or my all time favorite, while driving. For these folks, I don’t think Genie plus would make a difference for how much they are on their phone. its just one more thing between tweets, tik toks, face books, my spaces, you tubes, instagrams, and all of that other BS that exists out there.
Now, I do agree that the usefulness of the system sill suffer as more and more people use it.
