The Airlines to AVOID If You Don't Want to Get Bumped from Your Flight

If you’ve spent any time this summer traveling, chances are you may have run into a bit of a mishap here or there.

Gas prices reached all-time highs making road trips more expensive, plus flight delays and cancelations have been plaguing the airline industry left and right. Staffing shortages and reduced flight schedules have been cited as factors in these issues, and experts don’t believe air travel will be getting any easier anytime soon. And now, the United States Department of Transportation has released a report showing which airlines are the likeliest to BUMP you from your flight!

With so much uncertainty surrounding the airline industry, passengers have been faced with delays, cancelations, and being completely bumped from overbooked flights. The Office of Aviation Consumer Protection has created the Air Travel Consumer Report which shows the airlines that are most likely to involuntarily bump you from your flight.

Air travel has been a bit of a gamble recently.

So, which airline should you avoid if you want the highest chances of actually boarding the plane? Frontier Airlines had the highest number of involuntarily bumped passengers as opposed to others — 5.32 per 10,000 passengers were faced with “Involuntary Denied Boardings.” The second-highest number of bumped passengers came from Envoy Air with just .85 involuntarily denied boardings per 10,000 travelers.

The report consists of U.S. airlines with “at least one-half of one percent of total domestic scheduled-service passenger revenues and operate aircraft with a passenger capacity of 30 or more seats.”

In the first quarter of 2022, 2,453 passengers were denied boarding on Frontier Airlines.

For the airlines with the least amount of bumped passengers, there were actually four that didn’t involuntarily deny boarding to any passengers — Delta Air Lines, Allegiant Air, Endeavor Air, and Hawaiian Airlines in that order. Alaska, JetBlue, and United all ranked well with fewer bumped passengers, while Southwest and Spirit had a bit more — but still less than Frontier.

If you’re planning on flying soon and don’t want to run the risk of potentially being bumped from your flight, consider choosing one of the airlines listed as most reliable if at all possible. Once you’ve booked, make sure you check the airline’s app or website for the most up-to-date flight information.
