It’s hurricane season, and that means it’s VERY stormy in Florida.
During the summer months, we often see storms nearly every afternoon, and those can put a damper on your plans if you’re traveling to the theme parks. At Disney World, many outdoor rides will close with lightning, as well as a variety of outdoor entertainment options. But what about if it’s a travel day? In that case, you might want to be prepared for some delays.
On the afternoon of August 26th, Orlando International Airport issued a “ground stop” due to weather in the area. Because of this, many inbound flights are prevented from landing at the airport. This news was reported on Twitter by Eric Burris from WESH Orlando.
A 'Ground Stop' has been issued for @MCO due to storms in the area- holding some flights from heading our way. This will of course impact inbound and then outbound flights. We will be watching things closely and updating you as we get information…

If inbound flights can’t arrive at MCO, the domino effect typically causes delays and/or cancellations with outbound flights as well. At the time of publishing, 20 flights had already been delayed and 3 were canceled. Heavy storms are forecast for much of the Central Florida area, so those traveling today will want to be prepared, and those visiting the theme parks may need to take shelter.
UPDATE: As of 6PM EDT on August 26th, the ground stop has been canceled. Eric Burris from WESH commented that there are still “a ton of delays” that have resulted from the temporary stop.
The ground stop has been canceled, however as you can imagine there are a ton of delays. At least things should start moving once more… pic.twitter.com/YilSvUHL4y

And if you’re in the parks on a rainy day, keep in mind that you may need to shift your plans significantly. Oftentimes, bad storms will cause rides to close and things like fireworks shows to be canceled, so just be patient and keep an eye on the forecast leading up to and during your trip.
