In another sign that life is returning to “before COVID-19” normalcy, more Americans took to the skies over Labor Day weekend.
We have seen plenty of delays and flight cancelations over the past few months because of staffing concerns and other airline problems. But Labor Day weekend set a new kind of record.
The Transportation Security Administration announced recently that 8.76 million passengers traveled through airports between Friday, September 2nd, and Monday, September 5th — and that number was slightly above the number of passengers screened during Labor Day weekend 2019.
Friday was the busiest travel day, according to the TSA. This represents the FIRST holiday weekend that has topped pre-pandemic air travel numbers since the pandemic began.
There were fewer flight cancelations on Labor Day Weekend than Memorial Day Weekend, according to aviation industry analysis firm FlightAware. During Memorial Day Weekend in May, 22% of flights were delayed, compared with 16% during Labor Day Weekend.
Orlando International Airport is prepping to open the doors on a new, crowd-alleviating $3 billion expansion. Terminal C at the Orlando Airport is set to open on September 19th.
