There is a lot going on with Disney World resorts right now.
Disney’s BoardWalk Inn is getting some major changes (and a new restaurant JUST opened there), Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa just got a brand new DVC building, and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has demolished the old Spirit of Aloha building and is working on some new DVC villas in that space. So let’s take a look at the DVC villas progress at the Polynesian!
Back in late July, the former Spirit of Aloha space was gone and there was nothing but a lot of dirt left in that space.
At the end of August, though, we started seeing more construction vehicles in the space, so it looks like work is starting to really pick up there. There’s also a big mound of dirt present now.
There’s also scaffolding that’s been built at the far edge of the space, so it looks like we might start seeing some building construction happening soon.
One of the biggest updates is that the sign that used to point guests to Kona Cafe, ‘Ohana, and Spirit of Aloha at Luau Cove has been changed. Here’s what it looked like in July — note that Spirit of Aloha is still on there.
Here’s what that sign looks like now — Spirit of Aloha and Luau Cove have been completely removed from it.
Speaking of Kona Cafe, it’s currently closed for a refurbishment (like we said, a LOT is going on with the Polynesian right now!). It closed on August 15th, and we don’t yet have a reopening date. However, you can still use Mobile Order to get select breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings from Kona Island.
The good news is that almost all of the rest of the resort is still open, including the pools, and most of the dining. The character breakfast is also returning to ‘Ohana on September 27th, so keep that in mind if you’re looking for a great character dining experience!
We’re going to continue to keep an eye on the progress of the new DVC villas, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated on it, too. Be sure to stay tuned to DFB for more.
In the meantime, if you’re planning on staying at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort soon, just know that Spirit of Aloha is now gone and that there is some construction being done in the area.

The Tree is SAVED!!! YES!!! I can see in the background the tree has been boxed off. I just got married under that tree. It has great meaning for me , as well as many other DFTW Brides. Thank you for giving us hope for the tree!!

What a shame, the loss of a Dinner show that Disney is short on. All we have left is Hoop ti do…. very sad to see the Spirit show be shut down.

Pam, we were there in August and they’ve taken great care to perserve the roots and box the tree. Apparently it will be moved somewhere on property. What a magical memory you and your spouse share.

We are going for Thanksgiving weekend and I’m certainly disappointed to hear about the construction. We booked months ago and that certainly wasn’t mentioned or found anywhere. That’s a bit of a disappointment for such an expensive vacation. 🙁
