What’s the most unique thing you’ve ever eaten in Disney World?
We’re not talking about the standard fare of Mickey pretzels and Dole Whips. We’re talking about those wonderfully unique potato chip flavors you can get at EPCOT’s China Pavilion or that 50th anniversary drink at Be Our Guest that had an actual octopus tentacle in it. Well, we’re trying what might be the most unique snack yet — and it’s got BUGS in it.
Okay, so if you’ve followed us, you know all about Salt & Straw in Disney Springs (as well as in Downtown Disney in Disneyland). We’ve had a LOT of interesting ice cream flavors at this shop, but the new offerings here are a little EXTRA creepy and crawly. But hey, it’s Halloween — what more could we expect? So let us introduce you to the creepiest and crawliest of the flavors, the Don Bugito’s Creepy Crawly Critters. (We’ve seen this flavor at Disneyland before, but this is the first time it’s come to Disney World!)
This ice cream, which is a returning flavor, is made with Matcha ice cream with coconut candied meal worms and chocolate-covered crickets. Yep, there are real bugs in this ice cream…and WE ATE IT — for science. But here’s the thing, it was GOOD. The matcha ice cream tasted like a creamy matcha latte with a nice vanilla sweetness to it.
But the bugs were also good! They sorta’ reminded us of a savory KitKat, and as long as you don’t look at the ice cream while you’re eating it, you might actually like it. The flavors are well-balanced and they just work together well, bugs and all. But, of course, we know that not everyone will feel the need to try this one, so that’s why we tried it for you!
Honestly, though, we really really wished those bug pieces were smaller because seeing the mealworm tails as we picked up a spoonful of ice cream was…well…kinda’ gross. If they were smaller, we might not have been thinking about what exactly we were eating (which will definitely be a turn-off for some people). This one is ONLY for the most adventurous of eaters, we’ll say that.
Through the month of October, you can also get Black Cat Licorice & Lavender ice cream, which is made with anise and fennel caramel with salted lavender ice cream.
There’s also The Great Candycopia, which is made with Kit Kats, Reeses, Snickers, and Heath bars transformed into milk chocolate-buried feuilletine, peanut butter inside chocolate, and almonds smothered in bourbon vanilla toffee folded into salted butterscotch ice cream.
The Double Bubble Toil & Trouble is the vegan option for the month. It’s made with coconut ice cream with flavored bubble gum.
Finally, you can also grab a scoop of Jack o’ Lantern Pumpkin Bread, which is made with hunks of pumpkin bread, a pinch of warm spice, and whipped cream cheese frosting.
So try these new flavors…if you dare. A single scoop is $6.95, while a double scoop is $9.50. You can also get ice cream scoops in cones or pick up a pint to take home with you!
Curious about other Salt & Straw flavors we’ve tried? We’ve had everything from perfume-coated ice cream to deviled egg ice cream to ice cream with flower petals in it. If you don’t have adventurous taste buds, though, there are still a few other flavors you can try like the Double Fold Vanilla, Freckled Mint Chocolate Chip, and Chocolate Gooey Brownie.
