Hurricane Ian tore through Florida in September of 2022, impacting many individuals through heavy flooding and other damage.
Disney World closed for a few days, and we shared a look at what it was like to be in Disney World during and after the storm. But hurricane season doesn’t end until November 30th and some other systems have popped up in the Atlantic now. Are any of them heading to Disney World? Let’s take a look and see.
Up until Hurricane Ian, Hurricane season had been relatively quiet for those in Florida. Hurricane Ian served as a powerful reminder that Hurricane season is far from over. Now, some other disturbances are being tracked in the Atlantic, but will any of them affect Florida? Here’s what we know so far.
Prior Updates
Previously, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Hurricane Center was tracking 2 disturbances. That information is included below for referential purposes.
Click here to jump to the latest updates.
Disturbance #1 (in red in the photo above, orange in the photo below) is in the eastern tropical Atlantic at the moment and has been producing “disorganized showers and thunderstorms.” Some environmental conditions are expected to be favorable for gradual development of this system, and it is likely to become a tropical depression around the middle of this week. BUT, NOAA has shared that “further development will become less likely by the end of this week” due to an increase in upper-level winds.
The system is expected to move west and then turn northwestward or northward by the end of the week, while over the eastern tropical Atlantic. Overall, it has been given a 50% formation chance for the next 2 days, but a 70% formation chance through 5 days.
Disturbance #2 (in yellow in the photo directly above, and orange in the photo below) is east of the Windward Islands. The showers and thunderstorms for this system seem to have become a little bit better organized recently. NOAA says that “some further development of the wave is possible” and a tropical depression could form within the next few days.
NOAA warns that those with interests in the Windward Islands should stay up to date with updates on the system. Overall, it has been given a 30% chance of development through 2 days, and 40% through 5 days.
According to meteorologist Eric Burris, people have been asking whether there’s anything else coming to impact Florida. Thus far, he said that there are “no indications that either of these should threaten” Florida/Orlando. But, he shared that they will continue to watch the systems. Of course, things could change. Fox 51 has reiterated this by saying that none of the disturbances being tracked pose a danger to Florida “at this time.”
THE LATEST UPDATES
As of October 7th, the NOAA’s 5-day graphical tropical weather outlook appears to mainly show one storm that is being tracked — Tropical Depression 13.
According to their updates, tropical storm conditions are expected across parts of Columbia and Venezuela. It is then expected to strengthen into a hurricane and hurricane watches are in effect for San Andres, Providencia, and Santa Catalina Islands. There is also a potential for flash flooding in parts of Central America.
It appears the storm has become Tropical Storm Julia.
According to Eric Burris from WESH 2 News, this should not be a threat to Florida.
Tropical Depression 13 has formed in the extreme southern Caribbean Sea;
I'm quite happy to report this will not be a threat to us at all… however, our friends in Central America look to be getting a hurricane this weekend.

What Next?
Again, hurricane season lasts through November 30th, so we’ve still got some time to go before it’s over. You might be wondering what to do if you’re planning a trip to Disney World within the next few weeks, before hurricane season ends. Well, we’ve got some tips.
First, make sure to pack appropriately. If your trip ends up being impacted by a storm of any kind, you’ll want to make sure that you’ve got the supplies you need to still enjoy your vacation.

Second, make sure to watch weather forecasts carefully. You’ll want to watch for weather news ahead of and during your trip. Remember that things can change quickly.
We watch for severe weather warnings, hurricane warnings, tropical storm watches, flood advisories, etc., and work to bring you updates on that so stay tuned for more information from us as well.
Third, know what to expect. The key here is to be prepared for what a trip during hurricane season could involve. During Hurricane Ian, we saw Disney World, Universal Orlando, and other theme parks close temporarily for a few days. Disney specifically closed for 2 days.
We also saw a number of Disney World hotel restaurants closed during that time. Disney World hotels will also often offer meal kits during a hurricane closure. We saw Disney World hotel reservations go “missing” ahead of the storm, and some other closures and cancelation policy changes were announced.
After the temporary closure, Disney World’s theme parks reopened through a phased reopening approach, with hotel guests given a little extra time in the parks early in the day before regular guests were allowed to enter. Upon reopening, some rides were unavailable as damage from the storm was being addressed.
