We are sad to report that beloved Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane has passed away.
Robbie Coltrane was best known for his role in the British crime series Cracker and for playing Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, and he died on October 14th at age 72.
According to Deadline, Robbie Coltrane has been in ill health for the past two years, and he passed away at a hospital close to his home in Larbert, Scotland. He was a BAFTA award-winning actor for his role as forensic psychologist Dr. Edward “Fitz” Coltrane in Cracker, and he gained worldwide popularity playing the Hogwarts groundskeeper Hagrid in the Harry Potter films.
Coltrane was born on March 30th, 1950 in Rutherglen, Scotland as Anthony Robert McMillan, and he later took the stage name Robbie Coltrane as an homage to jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. In the 1990s he played Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in the James Bond films GoldenEye and The World is Not Enough, and he also had roles in the films Mona Lisa, Nuns on the Run, and Ocean’s 12.
Coltrane was named an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2006 and he is survived by his two children. Our thoughts are with Robbie Coltrane’s loved ones at this time. He will be missed.

THANK YOU. DFB is the first site to recognise that Robbie was an actor first and Hagrid second. Those of us old enough new him for many years before his role in the Harry Potter movies. 😭
