We’ve got big news from Disney World!
We’ve already shared some exciting updates about the construction projects going on around Disney World and updated you on all the price increases that occurred last month. Now we’ve got some interesting ride news to share about Space Mountain — items have now been BANNED from the ride!
On Space Mountain, guests are now no longer allowed to have any handheld devices — cameras, phones, etc. — while riding.
Those items must be secured on your person, such as in a pocket, put in the storage pouch, or left with someone who is not riding.
It’s not clear what caused this change to occur, but this will decrease the number of items lost on the ride. Many people assume they can keep a solid hold on their items during a fast ride, but many times, that unfortunately isn’t the case. Finding those items becomes nearly impossible on a dark ride like Space Mountain.
We know this may be disappointing to some who want to document the ride, but we remind you that this change was made for a reason, so please follow the instructions and don’t make cast members’ jobs harder! Cast members want to make sure you have the best, safest trip possible. As always, stay tuned to DFB for all the latest Disney World news!

Not a problem for me, I’m holding on for life with both hands! 🙂

I think this is the right decision. I rode SM in August and had a water flask in the side pocket of a backpack, which was placed at my feet. During the ride, I felt something hit my leg and I realised the bottle had been jolted out of the side pocket and was rolling around loose in the ride vehicle. I managed to reach it and hold it until the end of the ride but it made me think how dangerous it would have been if the heavy bottle had flown out on the ride and hit someone.

Love this rule. Someone probably got hit in the head from a flying camera or cell phone. All of these small objects should be secured on all roller coaster type rides. I can’t count the number of times a hairbow or Minnie ears have flown past me, although I’ve never seen sunglasses or a cell phone go by.

Saw a young teen lose his cell phone in safari expedition in the Animal Kingdom. The guide would not stop the ride n informed the family they would need to contact Guest Services. I saw where it feel, smack dab in the middle of mud. There’s a good chance another vehicle will push it further into the mud and bury it.

As a frequent rider in AK, I’ve seen many things go flying. Not only is this bad for the item and for you finding it, but it can be deadly for an animal who might come across it. Alway put the strip over your arm if you want pictures and and think twice about using a cell phone unless you can have an iron grip on it.
