A popular Magic Kingdom ride is CLOSING in early 2023, and no, we’re not talking about Splash Mountain.
Although Splash Mountain IS closing on January 23rd, it’s not the only mountain getting shut down for some updates. Disney’s calendar shows that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will also be closed for a while in January!
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be closed from Monday, January 9th through Friday, January 13th. It’ll reopen on Saturday, January 14th, and it’s now showing times to be open from 9AM to 10PM on that date (but check the My Disney Experience app during your visit to make sure those times don’t change). To be clear, the last open day before this closure is January 8th, and the ride will be closed for all of January 9th through the 13th.
If Big Thunder is your favorite ride, you may want to plan your next trip around that week so that you don’t miss out on this attraction. And don’t forget that just about a week after Big Thunder reopens, Splash Mountain will close down for a LONG refurbishment, during which time it’ll be transformed into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. (The new ride will open in late 2024.)
Another January closure to watch out for is the Disney Skyliner, which will be down from January 22nd through the 29th.
Rides close temporarily all the time in Disney World, usually just for a few hours at a time if there’s a technical issue or bad weather in the area. Longer closures like these ones will be noted in our weekly updates, where we go through all the Disney World closures for the upcoming week.
We’ll keep watching for more updates from Disney World, so stay tuned to DFB for all the latest news!
