Jambalaya? Check. Po’ Boys? Check. Beignets? Check, check, check!
When guests visit Disney’s Port Orleans — French Quarter Resort they know they’ll find an array of Creole and Cajun dishes, snacks, and drinks. Apart from these staples, sometimes the resort has specialty dishes depending on the time of year. With February being Black History Month, Celebrate Soulfully is coming back to Disney World as the parks and resorts share special offerings as part of the celebration.
At Port Orleans — French Quarter you can find a new offering at Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory. Here they’ll be serving up a Southern Fried Chicken Bowl, which includes crispy fried chicken thighs, candied sweet potatoes, rice, smoked collards, mac and cheese, and a corn muffin on the side. When we first heard about this, it definitely looked filling! Soul food has a long history and more often than not is cooked at home. How did this new Disney dish stand up?
Over at Disney’s Port Orleans – French Quarter, we tried the new Southern Fried Chicken Bowl! It’s got fried chicken thighs, white rice, collard greens, mac n’ cheese, sweet potatoes, and corn bread for $13.49! pic.twitter.com/S1f5ZzUotf

When our dish arrived, we noticed that it looked like we’d just been served a plate at a home-cooked meal with our family! The chicken looked delicious and the bread looked like it had been cooked to golden perfection.
This dish was very tasty, with several elements that reminded us of a freshly-cooked meal at home. The sweet potatoes were made with cinnamon and sugar — and were sweet enough to satisfy a craving but not so sweet that they couldn’t be finished. The mac-n-cheese was super cheesy and had a strong cheddar flavor without being too overpowering. The corn muffin was sweet and almost sticky — not dry at all! The greens were cooked perfectly to where they had a bit of crunch and weren’t at all slimy. The chicken was boneless, which made it really easy to eat, and the hot honey topping wasn’t at all spicy. We think it tastes more like a barbecue sauce than hot honey. The rice served more as a filler and complemented the meal perfectly!
Overall, we think this is a fantastic option for anyone seeking southern comfort foods. If you’re craving traditional southern meals, this bowl is for you! If this is something you’re used to eating at home, you might wanna skip this one. If you want to try it out for yourself, you can get the Southern Fried Chicken Bowl for $13.49 only during the month of February. This dish is actually available across multiple resorts, not just at Port Orleans, and you can check out the full list here.
