Disney’s 100-year anniversary celebration has officially kicked off!
As the celebrations begin, Disney shared a very special tribute to the mouse that started it all. And if you consider yourself a huge Disney NERD (it’s us, we’re Disney nerds) then you’ll want to see it.
Mickey Mouse was first introduced in 1928, and since then, the character has gone through a lot of stylistic changes. Animator Michael Woodside brought viewers along with him as he drew Mickey through the years.
He begins by drawing Mickey with his signature “big eyes and big smile” that he had when he debuted in the 20s. The design, Woodside says, is very simple yet still conveys Mickey as the lovable character he is.
Woodside then moves to draw Mickey when his design gained a little more life, stating that the Steamboat Willie film catapulted Mickey into fame and altered his design a little.
Mickey’s eyes became what animators call “pie wedge” eyes, and Mickey gained a rounder nose and stylized ears. This phase of Mickey lasted roughly 20 years until Fantasia came out.
The final design that Woodside creates is the Mickey we know today, thanks to the redesign Mickey went through for Fantasia. Mickey gained “full eyes” and his nose became more round and oblong.
Our pal Mickey has seen a lot of changes throughout the years and the tribute that was paid to him was very fun and informative.
