If you’re planning some travel this summer, it’s time to start booking those flights!
Here at DFB, we’re constantly on the lookout for ways to save on air travel, keeping up with the sales at different airlines, and scouring websites for the best deals. And if you’re wanting to get the cheapest flight possible for your next trip, there’s a NEW tool you need to know about!
Washington Post recently spilled the details on a new program introduced by Google Flights — The Google Price Guarantee. This feature launched a pilot program recently, and it will show travelers when Google Flights predicts a flight won’t get any cheaper before takeoff by adding a badge (that looks like a colorful shield) next to the flight’s price.
And even if Google gets the prediction wrong, the traveler still wins. If the flight drops more than $5 after you book, Google will pay you the difference. Prices are tracked from the time of booking until your flight departs.
However, there are a few rules. You’ll need to book the flight through the “Book on Google” function to get paid, instead of booking through the airline’s website. According to the Washington Post, “It doesn’t cost anything to participate in the program, but you’ll need to be logged into a Google account to book the flight, and your flight must be departing from the United States. You must also have your country and region set to the U.S. with USD selected as your currency. When you book your flight, you must have a U.S. billing address and phone number.”
If your flight price drops, Google will pay you the difference within 48 hours through Google Pay. The company will pay each customer a maximum of $500 per year, and you’re eligible for payments on up to three open price guarantee bookings at a time. If the flight price drops, Google Flights will send you an email and let you know if you’re owed any money.
Google announced a while back that they’re planning to phase out the Book on Google program after March 31st (which has already passed). But, the company is looking for ways to extend the Google Price Guarantee feature past without the Book on Google program, so it’s likely that this price guarantee is here to stay.
We’ll keep you updated with any more news about flight deals and airline tips, so stay tuned to DFB!
