In celebration of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Disney just unveiled this brand new MagicShot with Hiro and Baymax of Big Hero 6. This MagicShot is available now through May at select PhotoPass locations in both Disney World and Disneyland.
That’s not the only way that Disney is celebrating though!
Characters
There are so many great characters to meet and see throughout the Disney parks. Moana is now available for meet and greets in Discovery Island Character Landing of Animal Kingdom. She’ll be thrilled to tell you stories of her latest adventures and pose for a few fun-filled photos with you while you’re there.
You can also give a warm “Wilderness Explorers” hello to Russell and Dug as they float by in their flotilla while out on their latest expedition.
Catch a glimpse of Raya in action at the Adventure Friends Cavalcade in Magic Kingdom!
Meet with Mulan in EPCOT (we’ve also seen her surprise us in Magic Kingdom before) and ask her about joining her next round of training camp.
Edna Mode the vision herself is out meeting now in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, of course in the best fashion available.
Just maybe leave your capes behind, we hear she’s not a fan…it distracts from the now.
Live Entertainment
Bring your whole family out for unforgettable live entertainment. On May 6th and 27th, 2023 The Disney Springs Kids Club will feature Polynesian luau performers with story drumming and dance. You can catch them in The Landing section.
Additionally, amazing performers representing authentic Asian American Pacific Islander music and dance styles will be performing at the Orange Node. Here’s a look at when you can watch them:
- DJ Pram featuring two Bollywood-style dancers: May 4th, May 11th, May 18th, and May 25th, 2023
- Lahjit, a Salt Lake City, Utah band that plays music from various genres: May 7th and May 8th, 2023
- The Collective is a high-energy vocal group that celebrates boy bands and K-pop (short for Korean pop music) sensations from throughout history: May 14th, May 15th, May 28th, and May 29th, 2023.
- NETANE Polynesian Productions, whose performances feature authentic Polynesian dances from the Pacific islands of Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, and more: May 21st and May 22nd, 2023.
In EPCOT, live performances from Matsuriza in the Japan pavilion are happening daily throughout the morning and early afternoon.
You can enjoy the booming sounds of Taiko, an ancient form of Japanese drumming, across the World Showcase. You can also sign and dance along with the Viva Gaia Street Band at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
The band will be adding in songs from “Moana” to their daily sets so feel free to come out and celebrate with them and show off your best hula skills to the music.
Find Inspiration
If you’re looking for something to truly take your breath away, take a stroll down the Disney Springs Art Walk: A Canvas of Expression.
This year two more artists have added their talents to the mural walls: Vietnamese-American artist Thao Huynh French and Cambodian-American artist Andrew Hem. French uses texture and bright colors to create captivating graffiti art. Hem is excited to make his mark at Disney Springs after originally starting his career as a character artist for Disney. The newest Asian American artists join a diverse roster, including Eric Tan, Stacey Aoyama, and Leah Abucayan. It’s a perfect way to spend some time strolling Disney Springs and enrich your artistic mind.
Merchandise
It wouldn’t be a celebration if we didn’t have new merch with Disney!
Joey Chou’s latest collection hit Disney parks stores and shopDisney a few weeks ago but It has quickly garnered tremendous applause. The upbeat, contemporary style features the Disney castles with several iconic characters, rides, attractions, and fireworks woven into a perfectly blended design. If you haven’t already looked at that spirit jersey, be sure to check it out — it’s offered in both a Disney World and a Disneyland version along with several other matching items in apparel, home goods, puzzles, and more.
With so many great ways to celebrate it’s a great time to visit Disney! As always, for the latest in Disney parks news, stay with us at DFB!
