If you’ve been wondering where things stand with the Mary Poppins attraction in EPCOT, we have been too!
Lots of projects were announced during the D23 Expo that teased this attraction including Journey of Water inspired by Moana which is set to open to park guests later this year. Since then, we’ve had very confusing updates on this project and it seems that its mention has been wiped from the parks for a while now. Here’s what we do know!
It’s been a little while since we last talked about this project, so let’s rewind a bit. We first learned of the Mary Poppins attraction back in August 2019 during the D23 Expo. Among other projects, the then-CEO of Disney Parks Bob Chapek announced the upcoming attraction in a massive overhaul of EPCOT. This project was slated along with Journey of Water Inspired by Moana (that’s currently set to debut in the fall of 2023), a reimagining of Spaceship Earth, a brand new circle-vision movie for China named Wondrous China in the World Showcase, and more. These projects were announced as part of a multi-year reimagining of EPCOT and its attractions.
In case you’re not familiar with it, EPCOT’s Odyssey building was home to the EPCOT Experience, which overtook its seating area to show off the expansive projects that were to come. Initially, the Mary Poppins attraction was included in a brief section of the film that accompanied the UK Pavilion as the project spanned each affected section of the park including Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and introduced us to the icons and new names given to each “neighborhood” of EPCOT in World Celebration, World Discovery, World Nature and World Showcase.
Then, in March 2022, Disney released a statement saying the project had become “postponed” along with a few others like the retheming of Spaceship Earth. While we were bummed, we held out hope that we would get further updates down the line about the attraction, since Disney didn’t use words like “canceled” in their statement.
But something must have changed since that announcement because in July 2022 we noticed that the section of the EPCOT Experience that teased the upcoming attraction was quietly removed from the rolling script. We’ve tried checking on this for a while, but since our last update on this project in October 2022 we haven’t heard anything more on it.
So that leaves us to question if Disney has quietly scrapped this project for good, or if this is truly just an extended postponement that we’ll hear an announcement on further in the future. For now, it seems we will have to wait and see what more Disney will have to say on this and other projects that were announced within that same timeline. We promise to keep you updated on this as we hear more, so for the latest in Disney parks news stay tuned to Disney Food Blog!

Everything I’ve ever read about the Mary Poppins addition was that it was a teacup ride. Really? We do not need another carnival ride. Mary Poppins deserves much more than that. What about Mary Poppins taking us on a tour of 19th century London on one of the race horses or as a kite flying overhead? Use more imagination please.

One can only hope that number one, the imagineers are not allowed t0 change Spaceship Earth, and two, put the Mary Poppins experience back on the burner now that the Great Movie Ride has departed on its last tour.
Beyond that, Disney could consider bringing back the old tried and true attraction that keep guests returning like bringing back the Holiday Themed visit to the Country Bears at MK (just for the holiday period like they used to) and bring back the Enchanted Tiki Birds “under new Management” edition. It is a better show and fits in better with the Magic Carpet ride outside and the shopping Bazzar. These are easy changes for Disney being that they already own everything. These two, along with turning Test Track back into an attraction with a learning experience vis. the dark thrill ride it has become.

Wow some comments are snarky. As I watch how Disney came to be on Disney + and refer to my own experiences, as far as I’m concerned, Disney invented imagination and always blew it out of the parc. With so many things happening, I’m not surprised some things are on hold. Looking forward to trying the Tron ride when I go and enjoying everything Disney has to offer now. I always have an amazing time when I go 🥰

I really want a Mary Poppins ride added to the United Kingdom pavilion, but definitely NOT the teacup ride we’ve seen designs for. I already avoid the teacups in Magic Kingdom for good reason. I wholeheartedly agree with others who have suggested either having guests ride on carousel horses through an English “Jolly Holiday” landscape or soaring via umbrella-like vehicles over London.

As a kid I loved Mary Poppins. I have been so hopeful for a Poppins experience. A little area to walk through and a carousel or kite themed ride would be wonderful. I hope this comes to fruition eventually.

OMG!!!!!! I remember when my mom bought me a ticket for Mary Poppin’s El Paso Texas for 25 cents.
Mom made me a big paper bag of popcorn and I watched it 3 times in a row. I was 11 yrs. old.

It seems something like a Mary Poppins ride would make the UK Pavilion. At the moment there are rock bands but little else and compared to France this makes it seem very limited with what’s on offer. It would be fantastic to see a ride added so please let’s see something added as soon as possible. Looking forward to it.
