Parting is such sweet sorrow. Once again, Disney giveth, and Disney taketh away.
You might remember a certain spork situation we experienced in both Disneyland and Disney World when Galaxy’s Edge first opened in each park. At one point, dishes at Docking Bay 7 were served with a futuristic-looking spork — until guests started stealing them and POOF! Gone. And now, we’re afraid, something similar has happened again.
The newest table service spot at Hollywood Studios in Roundup Rodeo BBQ. This rootin’ tootin’ restaurant serves All-You-Care-to-Enjoy BBQ fare served family-style. Platters feature house-smoked meats, classic sides, and miniature “sweet surprises,” and you can see the FULL MENU with food photos here.
If you’ve been to Toy Story Land in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you probably already understand the premise of the area: you’ve been shrunk down to the size of a toy! That’s why Slinky Dog is so HUGE when you ride Slinky Dog Dash and why the toys in the area are GINORMOUS. Roundup Rodeo BBQ is the same — you’ve been shrunk and are now part of a rodeo arena created by Andy himself.
And, since you’re supposed to now be the size of a small toy, it only makes sense that everything else around you is pretty darn huge — down to the pencil you have to sign your check with! That’s right, when folks go to pay at the end of their meal here, they’re handed a GIANT, oversized pencil.
Or at least, they were! We confirmed with a Roundup Rodeo BBQ Cast Member that they are no longer handing out the giant pencils to guests when they sign their checks. The Cast Member didn’t share exactly why Disney made this decision or if it had anything to do with guests taking the pencils from the restaurant, but did share that it’s possible we could see the pencils return in the future.
When we experienced a similar situation during Spork Gate, Cast Members indicated that the change was due to the fact that people were stealing the utensils. So, while we’re not sure that’s the case here, all we’re sayin’ is: DO NOT STEAL THINGS FROM DISNEY WORLD. Actually, just maybe don’t steal things at all. It’s what Walt would want (probably).

In Disneyland Paris, to comply with laws, they now give out reusable cups which should be returned to points within the park. Unfortunately, people are saying how they’re keeping them as they’re good souvenirs and technically free, on Disneyland Paris Facebook groups. Someone said they bought home 9 of them!
Lizz says
Where are they putting a giant pencil is what I want to know…like I can see how you can easily hide a spork but the pencil might not even fit in a regular-size backpack… it’s not inconspicuous. Also, what are you going to do with a giant pencil – which BTW you can buy on amazon for cheap.
Todd says
The public messes everything up. Sadly there are always those who fail to show respect yet they wonder why prices increase and experiences are removed.
Jeff M says
I was there May 2nd. I wondered why I didn’t receive the oversized pencil at check time!
Therese says
I agree with AJ. Do not steal from anywhere especially from Disney. What are you teaching your children when you do?
GL Josh says
Or maybe those giant novelty pencils are being sharpened? It probably takes a significant amount of time to sharpen them without Andy noticing.
Ronjon says
Stealing utinsels as well as other resturant items is pretty low class. Seriously, are people really that cheap?
Richard says
I agree, stealing anything from anybody anywhere is wrong. If Walt was still around more then likely the stealing would not be happening. I feel WDW is robbing their guest every time they make a purchase whatever it may be. Tickets, food, merchandise, hotels etc. Everything is WAY over priced. I am not saying the guest are justified by taking stuff, they are just trying to get their moneys worth. Of course there are those people who will steal anyway.

On the inaugural Disney Wish sailing last year, cast members told us that over 1000 pieces of utensils were stolen from the Marvel restaurant. Really, people? This drives up the price of cruises for everyone else. One lady was caught stuffing even part of the table decor into her bag. Luckily it didn’t fit and she was caught. Not sure how these people can look at themselves in the mirror. These unique items are for all to enjoy, not for you to destroy other people’s enjoyment.
Carolyn says
Some just mess things up for everyone else to enjoy
DFB Gigi says
You know what? This is a valid point…much like a sharpened pencil.
Dottyanna says
Gosh, I find this hard to believe! Doesn’t anyone believe in Karma? What is WRONG with people?
Mike says
Several years ago I saw a middle age man place a Mickey trading pin in his pocket. I reported him to one of the cast members who was working in the gift store. They called security. Imagine being with your family when confronted. A thief!!! How embarrassing. If the general public would take the time to report these issues it would help defray the cost passed on to the rest of us.
Nightwing says
Maybe they could attach the pencil to a giant clipboard with a really big chain!
Carolyn says
I people wants these Giant pencils so badly, have some for sale, in all kinds of bright colors!!
shealand says
As usual the greedy among us ruin it for everyone else.
Jim says
Why don’t they attach the large pencil to a large clipboard with some sort of flexible wire? I think that would be a good fix, keeping within the theme. Then make sure the servers collect them.
Carolyn says
Meg’s comment, this person that tried to stuff table decor should have left at next port, Please people simply tell a cast member you love a particular item displayed and ask if you can buy it???? If not take a picture and when you get home MAKE IT!
Justin says
People will try to steal anything that isn’t nailed/glued down. It’s basically human nature. It’s a shame, but you know it’s true. Why pay for something you can take for free?
Randi Briggs says
Often, when I wanted something as a souvenir, I would ask if I could purchase it, or if it was for sale somewhere else and often they would either give it to me, or tell me where I could get it. Sometimes honesty pays off!
