If you’ve got a serious sweet tooth and love beignets, we’ve got some HUGE news to share with you.
So, as you know, Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen in Downtown Disney has been renovated into Jazz Kitchen Coastal Grill & Patio (and recently opened per their Instagram account). Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen Express also just got an update and recently reopened as Beignets Expressed. Yep, this is a spot that is ALL about beignets, with MULTIPLE flavors to try. So we, obviously, had to go see — and taste — it for ourselves!
Atmosphere
The NEW Beignets Expressed spot specializes in beignets, including fun flavors that will change out every month. The exterior of the snack spot also looks a little different now — it’s very modern with a jazzy look and feel. You’ll also find a few tables outside where you can sit down and enjoy your sugary treats.
You can even watch the beignets being made from a window!
Inside is an open and spacious area to order.
If you LOVE these beignets, you can even buy the Beignet Mix for $9.99 to make your own at home!
You can also stock up on Beignets Expressed caps and t-shirts, if you want.
But it’s time to order!
Menu
You’ll find a variety of beignets here…
…including Original New Orleans Beignets, as well as four Glazed Beignets, including the Glazed of the Month, Banana Foster, and Snickerdoodle.
You can also get a variety of drinks, including soft drinks, water, coffee, hot chocolate, juice, milk Frozen Hot Chocolate made with Ghirardelli, and a Frozen Mint Julep (non-alcoholic).
But we’re here for the beignets, so let’s dive right in.
Eats
We opted for the Dip, Drizzle & Sprinkle for $16.99, which features four beignets. You’ll get one of each: Bananas Foster, Snickerdoodle, Simply Glazed, Glazed of the Month, and one sauce (we went with the Creme Anglaise.)
We’ll start with the Glazed of the Month, which is the Rainbow Crunch. It’s a Blueberry, Lemon-Glazed Beignet topped with a crispy Rainbow Cereal Crunch. Yep, it’s essentially a Fruity Pebbles-covered Beignet.
We thought this beignet tasted just fine, but we weren’t big fans of the glaze on it. The rainbow crunch cereal was okay, but together, it all kinda tasted a little TOO fruity, as in artificial. There’s a very good chance, though, that this beignet might be a big hit with kids.
Now onto the Bananas Foster, which is made with Banana Rum, Cinnamon-Sugar, Caramel, and Vanilla Bean Crème Anglaise. Okay, so this one also didn’t do it for us. 🙁
The banana taste didn’t taste REAL — in fact, it was sort of like banana taffy with a hint of vanilla. If you love those artificial-type flavors then you might be fine with this, but it might not be ideal for those seeking a “real” banana flavor.
The Simply Glazed Beignet turned out to be our favorite of the four. It was nice and warm and had a sweet vanilla-flavored glaze that just worked.
This one didn’t have that artificial flavor of the first two we tried. It was just a classic warm glazed beignet.
Finally, the Snickerdoodle Beignet was our second favorite. It had a Cookie Butter glaze and Cinnamon Sugar. Again, it’s simple, but that’s what works.
The flavor was great (not artificial at all) as it was just a classic glazed beignet with a warm cinnamon flavor. Sometimes, there really is nothing wrong with keeping it simple!
The Creme Anglaise Dipping Sauce was very thin and watery with a vanilla taste. It was just…okay.
So let’s go through some final thoughts.
Nosh or Not
Stop by Beignets Expressed if:
- You LOVE beignets — that is what this spot is all about, after all!
- You want to try beignets with different flavors and don’t mind some artificial tastes
Skip Beignets Expressed if:
- You are looking for treats that aren’t too sweet
- You would rather get a Mickey-shaped beignet or a simple, classic beignet
Overall
Would we skip the Mickey-shaped Beignets in Disneyland to get these instead? Probably not if we had a park ticket. The only ones we would probably even get again here would be the Simply Glazed one and maybe the Snickerdoodle. But give us a Mickey Beignet over ALL OTHERS any old day. Still, you might feel very differently. And with changing flavors, this can be a great spot to visit again and again to see what’s new.
