It’s been a little over six months since Bob Iger returned as the Walt Disney Company’s CEO, but in that short amount of time, the company has gone through a LOT of changes.
Not only has Iger overseen a series of “organizational and operations changes,” but there have also been some serious budget cuts made to the tune of $5.5 billion. A portion of those budget cuts included laying off 7,000 employees, and the company has now met that goal.
According to Variety, Disney recently finished handing out notices to the remaining employees affected by its final round of job cuts. These job cuts mainly affected those employed in Disney’s media divisions, with those employed at the Disney Parks left mostly untouched.
However, Disney still has plans to get rid of more international roles within the company, but it has reached the immediate goal that it set back in February 2023.
Other cuts the company is focusing on include $2.5 billion in “non-content costs,” as well as cuts of $3 billion in non-sports content costs. Most recently, Disney pulled more than 50 shows from its Hulu and Disney+ streaming libraries in an effort to cut costs on streaming.
Disney’s streaming cuts arrived right after the Writers Guild of America went on strike, with part of the WGA’s demands being better compensation (among other things) when it comes to their work on TV shows and movies on streaming platforms. The strike has already affected some of Disney’s upcoming projects, including the Blade movie.
Meanwhile, Iger is also in the midst of a battle between the Walt Disney Company and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis after Florida stripped Disney of its Reedy Creek District to set up the Central Florida Tourism Oversight Board for the property that is in and around Disney World. This came after Disney made an official statement in response to Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law.

Reedy Creek is a distraction made to order for Iger…Slashing employees left and right and the remaining employees are adoring him because he is fighting the big bad Ron Desantis for social justice. Open your eyes people – it’s all smoke and mirrors. Follow the $$$$$$$ $7,000 layoffs and counting…
