Do YOU know why June is a very important month for McDonald’s fans?
If you’re a true fan of the Golden Arches, you probably know all about the classic McD’s mascots like the Hamburglar, Birdie the Early Bird, and Grimace. Maybe you even know that Grimace celebrates his birthday in June! To mark the occasion, McDonald’s came out with a NEW shake inspired by the fuzzy purple character, and I knew I just HAD to try it. Come with me to check it out!
Grimace’s Birthday Meal is now available at McDonald’s locations everywhere.
Although the only NEW part of this meal is the Grimace’s Birthday Shake, you cannot order the shake on its own (we asked). You must order the full meal, which costs $11.59 if you get it with a 10-piece McNuggets or $12.09 if you get it with a Big Mac. Note that there’s an upcharge if you upgrade it to a large meal. The meal comes with the shake, an entree (nuggets or a Big Mac), and fries.
The nuggets and fries are exactly the same as you’d normally find at McDonald’s.
Nothing different or celebratory about these!
The exciting new item is Grimace’s Birthday Shake, which is made with vanilla soft serve and a berry flavor. It’s bright purple, which we thought was pretty fun and definitely fitting. But, many artificially-colored drinks have a reputation for being, well, bad. How does the new shake stack up?
I liked how it looked, but unfortunately, the flavor wasn’t my favorite. There’s definitely a hint of berry in the shake, but it tasted artificial and almost chemical-y. Honestly, I’m not entirely sure what’s in this shake, but it’s not as berry-y as you may imagine. One of my friends who tried it thought it tasted like cough syrup. 😬
Some of my friends tried it as well, and the general consensus was not in favor of the shake. Although it kind of grew on some people (and I have to admit, but the 4th or 5th sip I was enjoying it more than the first couple of sips), overall, no one loved it. Honestly, it was weird.
The only one in our group who really liked it was my 4-year-old nephew, so maybe that’s the best audience for this particular treat! However, remember that you have to buy the full meal in order to get the shake, so if you’re buying it for your kids, you can’t get it as part of a Happy Meal. You’ll have to get it with the 10-piece nuggs or the Big Mac (which don’t really sound like kids’ meals to me).
I also didn’t love that the meal cost almost $12. I don’t know about you, but I usually go straight for the dollar menu when I visit McDonald’s, so $12 seemed steep for a single meal at this fast food spot.
In general, I’d stick with the vanilla or chocolate milkshake, or go for the classic vanilla cone (as long as the machine isn’t broken).

I was allowed to buy just the shake here in West Virginia. I really liked the flavor. Reminded me of fresh blueberries and blackberries

I got one yesterday and hubby and I liked it. We got it by itself in Arkansas.
I guess I have the taste of a 4 year old. I thought it was grape flavored.
