When it comes to park icons, Spaceship Earth in EPCOT is probably one of the most recognizable in Disney World, second only to Cinderella Castle.
Not only do we love to ride the Spaceship Earth attraction, but we can’t help but marvel at the architecture of its spherical structure. We also love seeing it come to life at night with a cool lighting show that sometimes changes depending on the occasion. Well, now, ANOTHER city has created its own version of Spaceship Earth. (Sort of. Well, you’ll see what we mean in a second.)
Las Vegas is now home to the MSG Sphere, the largest sphere in the world. Although it hasn’t technically made its big debut yet, the sphere showed off a little bit on the Fourth of July with a light display that included the American flag, a basketball, Earth, and more, according to the Sphere Twitter account.
The Sphere even gave us a sneak peek at some holiday lighting schemes, with a Jack-o-lantern for Halloween and a snow globe for Christmas.
Per The Sphere’s website, the first show will officially debut in the fall, and it’s called “Postcard from Earth.” Get this — the spectacle will be directed by Academy-Award-nominated filmmaker Darren Aronofsky — you know, the guy behind Black Swan, The Wolverine, and The Whale. Tickets are available now on the Sphere’s official website.
However, that’s just the beginning for Sphere. U2 will play their first live show since 2019 at the Sphere this fall. Tickets for the event are on sale, with several dates already sold out, so if you’re interested, you’ll need to jump on those fast! Say, do you think we can get U2 to play Spaceship Earth?
Of course, the comparisons to Spaceship Earth are hard to ignore, and the science behind its structure and lighting are veryyy similar. The Sphere (which is geodesic like Spaceship Earth) features 580,000 sq. feet of LEDs, so it’s a little fancier than Spaceship Earth. If you want to get into the WHOLE science behind it, though, the Sphere website goes into GREAT detail with the science AND mathematical formulas behind the structure. There’s Geodesic Math involved, people. Yes, really.
So if you live out West and want to get some Spaceship Earth vibes, just head to Las Vegas for a quick trip to see the Sphere.
