Although there’s a lot we DO know about the life of Walt Disney, sometimes we learn NEW facts about the man behind The Walt Disney Company, which is now celebrating its 100th anniversary.
We know Walt liked simple foods (like chili), and we know he loved trains. But there are other little smaller details that you may not know, including one an Imagineer recently shared.
Imagineer and Disney Legend Bob Gurr spent some of his life actually working with Walt Disney. You see, Gurr, is the man who designed most of the classic ride vehicles in Disneyland, including Autopia, the Disneyland Monorail, and Matterhorn Bobsleds. In fact, we can credit Gurr with the creation of the iconic Haunted Mansion Doom Buggy, too.
Bob recently shared a story about Walt Disney. If you’ve ever seen the Fire Station in Disneyland, you might have noticed there was an apartment above it. That apartment was a second home for Walt while he was working on Disneyland, but it also acted as a second home to his wife, Lillian, and their children.
Bob told a story about Walt coming to the fire station and parking his gray Thunderbird in the back. Walt liked to get up in the morning and go to Carnation Cafe (which is still there on Main Street, U.S.A.) where he would squeeze fresh orange juice to take back up to the apartment for Lillian. Isn’t that so sweet?
If you’ve never visited Disneyland, there is a lot of amazing Walt Disney history you can experience there, especially as Walt and his family spent so much time there himself. It’s worth visiting for that alone, although being we are Disney FOOD Blog, we might argue that there’s some AMAZING food to be had there, too (what else would you expect in the place where Doritos were invented?).
Anyway, we love hearing these stories about the man who started it all with a Mouse.
