Are there just some rides in Magic Kingdom that are non-negotiable every time you visit?
We know we prefer a lot of the classic rides. We can’t imagine not riding Jungle Cruise, Space Mountain, or “it’s a small world” (hey, don’t judge us! We LOVE that song). Another classic that we can rely on is Pirates of the Caribbean, except, well, that ride has been particularly UNRELIABLE recently.
So what’s going on with Pirates of the Caribbean?
Okay, so Pirates of the Caribbean has been closed a LOT lately, likely due to some kind of technical issue. On Friday, August 4th, the ride was down for much of the day. Well, the next day, August 5th, the ride was down ALL day, and Cast Members informed us it was because of technical difficulties.
We also noticed the ride was closed for an extended period of time on Monday, July 31st.
We did ask several Cast Members if they had an idea of what the problem is or what’s going on with Pirates of the Caribbean, but we were told that no one really knows.
So what does this mean? Well, it means that if Pirates of the Caribbean is one of your “must-dos,” you may end up missing out if it’s still having problems on the day you visit Magic Kingdom. We remember similar issues with Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in Disney’s Hollywood Studios before it closed for a refurbishment (it has since reopened), so we wouldn’t be surprised if Pirates of the Caribbean gets some refurbishment love soon.
We’ll try to get more details and keep an eye on the situation, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

Love the ride! Always have. It’s Johnny Depp. Please get it fixed before my family visit in March 2024.

I have always enjoyed the attraction. Even way back when in I think 1980 or so when I first went to WDW. I really liked the special effects added with the mist and Pirate head (I think Blackbeard), the lights in the water representing mermaids and of course the addition of Johnny Depp. I will save my thoughts on the “Red Head” for a different time and place but you can guess what I think. Also the part with the ships has improved and one might get a few drops of water on you now like back in the old days. But alas the pirate head is gone (think it is still at DL), the green mermaid lights are gone (do people, Disney have something against mermaids?) The removal of the skeleton of the mermaid is a non issue for me) and the photo added has been improved since my first photo taken on the ride but could be improved some more. The fire scene was improved/refurb/touched up a while back and unless you follow a blog or two most folks probably do not know this. Bring back the special effects or add some or one especially at the first of the ride as you waste a whole room/area with just floating along. Don’t think I heard “dead men tell no tells” either back in May this year/2023. All sound tracks and speaking need improving as well. Disney just needs to upgrade and refurb! Maybe the Hat Box Ghost got lost and is messing up the works? LOL.

It’s February 14 and I’m at WDW and the ride was close first thing. Finally opened so we ran over to get in line, only to see huge crowds walk I g off. Down again. Several hours later we saw it was up again. Got in line for about 10 minutes and guess what? Yup down AGAIN. So frustrating.
