Though hurricanes and tropical storms are often things we think about as impacting Disney World in Florida, this week has brought some storm concerns to the west coast.
Hurricane Hilary is a storm in the Pacific that the National Hurricane Center has been tracking. We previously shared how the storm could bring severe weather to Disneyland, and gave a peek into how Disneyland was preparing for unprecedented weather because of the storm, but now we have an important update.
In a message posted on their website, Disneyland has announced that they will be closing EARLY tomorrow — August 20th, 2023 — due to the storm.
Their message notes that “Disneyland Resort theme parks will close early tomorrow, Sunday Aug. 20, with Disney California Adventure Park closing at 9 p.m. and Disneyland Park closing at 10 p.m.”
Additionally, Downtown Disney will close at 11PM. The Disneyland resort hotels will remain open for those staying on property.
You can see the full message below.
We also received the same message on the Disneyland app.
As of the 3PM MDT update from the National Hurricane Center, there is a potential for a historic amount of rainfall in the southwestern U.S. and that is expected to “cause flash, urban, and arroyo flooding.” They note that tropical storm conditions are expected to start Sunday in portions of the southwestern U.S. within the tropical storm warning area.
Zooming in on one of NOAA’s maps, you can see where Anaheim falls in terms of where the storm might go. The potential track area is marked in light blue, while the darker blue line along the coast indicates a tropical storm warning.
Here’s a more zoomed-out view of its forecast cone.
According to The Weather Channel, a tropical storm warning remains in effect for Anaheim (as well as other areas). Anaheim is where Disneyland is located.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency for much of Southern California, including Orange County (the county within which Disneyland is located).
If you are planning to visit Disneyland tomorrow or in the upcoming days, stay safe and be cautious. Also, be sure to check the schedule for updates as hours and other offerings are subject to change.
We’ll continue to watch for updates about the situation and let you know what we find.
