A super rare weather event is headed towards the Southern California area, including Disneyland.
Hurricane Hilary is currently a category 3 hurricane and is headed straight for Mexico and the California Baja Peninsula, meaning its path will take it to Southern California, where Disneyland is located. Now, Disney World is no stranger to hurricanes (we’ve seen a few over the past few years), but this is the first time Disneyland has been in the path of such a storm. So what is Disneyland Resort doing to prepare for Hurricane Hilary?
UPDATE: As of Saturday afternoon, Hurricane Hilary has weakened to a Category 2 storm according to CNN.
According to CNN’s Natasha Chen, Disneyland is already taking precautions to prepare for a lot of wind and rain before the storm arrives in the area. This means that Cast Members are gathering up necessary supplies and making sure that storm drains are clean and clear.

If you’re visiting Disneyland during this time, you can expect that wind and rain will affect things like entertainment, as well as result in the closure of all outdoor rides. However, depending on the severity of the weather, there could be other impacts: guests will be notified by Cast Members and the Disneyland app of anything that comes up that was unexpected.
Likewise, Universal Studios has also said that it plans to remain open but suggests that guests keep an eye on the Universal Studios Hollywood website for updates before visiting.
And @UniStudios spokesperson says:
"…The safety of our guests and team members is our top priority, and while we expect to remain open, we suggest guests visit our website at https://t.co/3pDQHJ6neP for updates prior to visiting our destination.”— Natasha Chen (@NatashaChenCNN) August 19, 2023
If you happen to be flying into or out of Los Angeles or Anaheim airports anytime soon for a Disneyland trip, you’ll also need to check with your airline before you go to the airport to see if your flight has been delayed or canceled, something that may happen when the storm arrives in the area.
Please check with your airline before heading to LAX to see if your flight has been delayed or cancelled. Please leave yourself extra time to get to and from the airport. Updates will appear here all weekend.

We’ll also keep an eye on the situation and post updates as we have them.
