It’s probably safe to assume that majority of Disney World visitors have gotten to Orlando via plane. (Except for you, Florida residents. We’re very jealous of you.)
However, if you’re in a situation where you can easily drive within a day to Disney World, like if you live in a surrounding state, now might be a good time to skip out on the flight for a change and drive to the magic. While flying is undeniably quicker and easier in most circumstances, some issues lately might make you rethink your choice and inspire you to take a road trip.
It probably comes as no surprise that the airline industry has taken a series of enormous hits that seemed to start with the COVID-19 pandemic. From airline shortages to natural disasters, so much can impact a single flight — which often causes a chain reaction. Some of these scenarios might be great reason for you and your crew to hop in the car to travel to your next vacation. Let’s talk about it!
Inclement Weather on Both Coasts
According to CNN, thousands of flights have been cancelled in August alone as bad weather hit the East Coast. This, of course, was followed by Hurricane Hilary’s affect on the West Coast, cancelling more flights.
Unfortunately, August likely doesn’t mark the end of inclement weather, especially on the East Coast, which leads us to the next reason you might want to rethink flying.
Hurricane Season
According to the National Hurricane Center, September 10th will likely mark the peak of hurricane season. Of course, this is something that can’t always be predicted, and Florida could be struck with rainy, stormy weather at any point throughout the fall.
To be safe, we’d consider not flying until later in October or November if you’re worried about weather delays, but this is just based on predictions from the Hurricane Center.
Holidays
We’re getting to the point of the year where Disney World is about to be … slammed. First, there’s fall break. Then, there’s Halloween. Then, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. Disney World will likely be packed, and so will the airports.
To avoid waiting in long lines at the airport, you could skip that part completely and just drive! The roads will also likely be busy here and there, but for some, that could be more manageable.
Lost Luggage
According to a BBC article, airlines are experiencing a peak in the amount of lost luggage in 1o years. Although the article did say that these numbers seem to be recovering and trending downward, it’s still not something you want to risk if you can help it. Of course, you don’t have to check a bag if you do choose to fly. This problem can be easily solved by simply packing only carry-on bags.
However, if you know you will have to check baggage for whatever reason, we’d consider driving to save yourself the anxiety.
Pilot Shortage
Over the past few years, airlines have had a decline in pilots, which has ultimately resulted in a pilot shortage. Because of this, there have been numerous delays and cancellations across the country. According to a New York Post article, this shortage could last for another decade.
Greater risk of flight delays and cancellations might be enough to make many of you reconsider flying.
