A new land has opened in Disney’s California Adventure Park!
San Fransokyo Square — a Big Hero 6 re-theming of the Pacific Wharf area — officially opened on August 31st, 2023. We had already seen some new eats and drinks arrive at restaurants in the area ahead of the official opening date, but now a rethemed/updated restaurant is open and we’re here to give you a review on a few menu items you’ll find there!
Atmosphere
San Fransokyo is the town in the movie Big Hero 6 and Aunt Cass is Hiro’s, the main character’s, guardian. In the movie, Aunt Cass owns a bakery and coffee shop. Now in San Fransokyo Square in Disney’s California Adventure, Aunt Cass has a Café called, appropriately, Aunt Cass Café!
This is meant to be the second bakery cafe operated by Aunt Cass. It is a Quick Service restaurant and has replaced Pacific Wharf Cafe. Mobile Order is available here so you can cut down on some of your waiting. In terms of atmosphere, the cafe has some theming on the outside letting you know that it is owned by Hiro’s aunt.
There are also signs showing that Mobile Order is available here.
Inside, look for fun details like a chart showcasing when sourdough bread deliveries are being made.
You’ll find tables and chairs outdoors, covered by bright PINK umbrellas, so you can chow down on your eats in some shade.
Alright, let’s take a look at the menu!
Menu
The menu here includes a variety of different options. Look for seasonal offerings at this spot, like the current Vampire Mickey-shaped Sourdough.
In terms of cafe specialties, there is Curry Beef, Mac and Cheese served in a Sourdough Bread Bowl, Clam Chowder, a Soba Noodle Salad, and some sandwiches.
Plant-based eaters can opt for a Soba Noodle Salad. There are also a variety of Sourdough options and they are plant-based…
…and that includes the ADORABLE Baymax Bread!
Other options include kids meals, sides…
…desserts (like the Japanese-style Fluffy Cheesecake)…
…and some alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
Now, let’s take a look at our eats and drinks!
Eats
We tried out a few main meals and some drinks.
One of the items we tried was the Shrimp Katsu Sandwich. This sandwich is served with a panko-breaded shrimp patty with cabbage slaw, spicy mayo, and katsu sauce all on a potato bun. It is served with garlic chips. We liked that the slaw paired nicely with the spicy mayo because the spicy mayo did add a kick!
We noticed that the shrimp patty was very similar to a crab cake texture and it wasn’t a super strong shrimp flavor. Overall, we thought the shrimp could have actually been a bit more flavorful and a bit less salty. But if you like shrimp, then you would probably really enjoy this sandwich! If you don’t like shrimp, you’ll probably want to pass. You can get this for $14.99.
Another item we tried was the Curry Beef. This was made up of beef, carrots, potatoes, and onions all cooked in a classic curry and topped with rice, pickled ginger, and green onions. It’s served in a bread bowl.
There was a bit of a mild spice, but it didn’t overpower the curry flavor. And the curry was a good, classic curry broth with the pickled ginger shining through. If you’re not a fan of spice or curry, this might not be the dish for you. But if you enjoy curry, ginger, a bit of spice, and bread bowls you should give it a try! It’s $12.49.
During another visit, we grabbed the San Fransokyo Clam Chowder. This features a Creamy Clam Chowder with Bacon, Potatoes, and a hint of White Miso. It is priced at $12.49.
The clam chowder was your standard clam chowder. Unfortunately, we didn’t really get a noticeable miso flavor. The veggies and bacon were prominent though and the clam flavor was pretty strong. That can be a great thing if you love clams, but if you prefer the clam flavor in your soup to be more subtle, you’ll want to steer clear of this dish!
The bread bowl it was served in was SUUUUUPER soft with crispy edges and delicious so that really was a win here. Overall, if you love clam chowder with a strong clam taste and a great bread bowl, give this a try!
Drinks
In terms of drinks, we tried the Specialty Caramel Cream Cold Brew. It’s made with Joffrey’s Coffee Caramel Mudslide Cold Brew and topped with house-made sea salt caramel whipped cream. And it was served in an adorable Baymax cup!
We really enjoyed the sea salt caramel whipped cream the best! The sea salt wasn’t overpowering and it had a yummy, sweet caramel flavor. However, we weren’t the biggest fans of the cold brew itself. We didn’t notice a whole lot of caramel flavor in the cold brew. It seemed to be mostly just a typical cold brew coffee with a hint of caramel. If you prefer to have caramel with a hint of coffee, this probably isn’t the right drink for you. However, if you like the taste of coffee and just a tad sweet, you would probably like this cold brew drink. Grab one for $6.79.
On another trip to Aunt Cass Cafe, we grabbed the Honey Lemon-Ade. This is priced at $6.99 and is made with Minute Maid Lemonade Zero Sugar and Yuzu Puree with Passion Fruit and Strawberry Popping Spheres.
This drink was GREAT! The yuzu flavor really stood out and the strawberry popping pearls were a fun addition from a textural perspective. It was more of a tart drink than a sweet drink though, so just keep that in mind. Also, while the description mentioned passion fruit, we didn’t get any of that flavor.
Still, we really have no complaints about this one! If you like a tart (yet also sweet) drink that is refreshing, this is a great option.
Nosh or Not
Stop by Aunt Cass Cafe if:
- You love a dish served in a good bread bowl
- You want some tasty seafood
- You are looking for a fast but satisfying meal in San Fransokyo Square
Avoid Aunt Cass Cafe if:
- You want a really light meal (the bread bowls can make these quite heavy)
- You are a plant-based eater (there’s not much on the menu in terms of plant-based meals here except for the Soba Noodle Salad)
- You aren’t a big bread fan (several of the dishes here really focus on the bread as a highlight)
Overall
Overall, we really enjoyed Aunt Cass Café. If you like to try new foods and flavors we would recommend giving this a try!
The menu has a fun combination of flavors that you could really enjoy. Stay tuned for more food news and reviews!
