Many Disney fans believe there is a “right” way and a “wrong” way to visit a Disney park.
For anyone who hasn’t been to Disney World before, planning the trip can be a bit daunting. There’s so much to consider like plane tickets, park tickets, Genie+, and when the best time to go is. We’ve realized that people tell straight-up lies when they’re giving advice on how to “do Disney.” We’re here today to expose those lies!
We just released a video about NEW things we wish we’d known before we went to Disney World, and you can check that out right here!
We asked our readers on Facebook “What’s the worst advice you could give someone going to Magic Kingdom for the first time?” and these were their answers!
“You Don’t Need to Rope Drop Magic Kingdom”
Andrea and several others shared the worst advice is that you don’t need to rope drop in Magic Kingdom. This is certainly NOT good advice. Rope dropping means being at the park exactly when the park opens, or when they drop the rope to let you through. Magic Kingdom is by far the busiest park at Walt Disney World. This can mean much longer lines for literally everything!
When you rope drop, you can beat a lot of the crowd there and have a better chance of getting on the rides with shorter wait times. If you wait to get to the park too late in the day, your chances of standing in line longer go way up.
Our advice is to wake up early and be at the park BEFORE it opens so you can be in line for the rides right away and beat the crowds! Of course, if you aren’t a morning person, rope drop may seem like a very unpleasant way to start your day, so if sleeping in is your priority, you do you! Just know you’re missing out on some of the day’s shortest lines. One hot tip, though: the SECOND best time to ride popular rides at Magic Kingdom is later in the evening, especially during and after the fireworks. So, if you didn’t get there early, plan to stay late!
“You Can Do Everything in the Park in One Day”
We had many people, including Tracy, Rissa, and Rob, say their bad advice is to do everything in Magic Kingdom in one day.
Magic Kingdom is a huge park with tons of attractions and things to do. It is nearly impossible to do every single thing there in one day (and still be smiling at the end of it). We recommend that, if you plan to be at Walt Disney World for more than one or two days, you plan at least two days just for Magic Kingdom.
If you plan for multiple days, you’ll have a greater chance of seeing and doing everything without running the entire day.
“Holidays and Summer are the Two Best Times To Go”
Cynthia told us on Facebook that you should go to Magic Kingdom during the summer and Robert said that holidays are the best time to visit.
Trust us, unless it’s a bucket list item for you, being in Magic Kingdom on the day of a big holiday like Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve might be kind of miserable. And as for the summer, if you like the heat and humidity, then the summer might be fine for you, otherwise, it can be pretty sweaty.
Both of these times of year, holidays and summer, are some of the most crowded, too. We would suggest finding time in the spring or fall for some of the best crowds and temperatures.
“You Don’t Need to Plan, Just Wing It!”
You know this is not great advice when lots of people are commenting it on our Facebook post asking for the worst advice. Lisa, Zahra, Melissa, and many others shared this piece of advice, “wing it!”
It might sound crazy to plan out your vacation days, but we seriously suggest it at Disney World. Also, since you need a Park Pass Reservation — at least until that requirement ends for most travelers on Jan. 9. 2024 — it’s almost impossible to go to Disney without any planning. With the My Disney Experience app and Genie+, you have great tools to help you get the most out of your day. Plus if you have specific places you want to eat, you’re probably going to need a dining reservation, which you can book 60 days out from the date you want to make them (or from your check-in date if you’re staying in a Disney World hotel).

We find advance planning to take the stress out of our Disney World days. Now, if you truly want to have a Disney World vacation with lots of spontaneity, you don’t have to plan much other than making your park pass reservations. It is totally possible to walk into Magic Kingdom or EPCOT and have a great day with zero planning — just know that if there are certain attractions and restaurants on your bucket list, you might miss out on them without a plan.
“You Don’t Need to Wear Comfy Shoes”
Our friend Jody said that you should wear high heels when visiting the parks. Nikki also mentioned that high heels are the way to go because “everyone dresses up to go to the parks!” Other people mentioned wearing sandals. Talk about straight-up lies!
Trust us, you’re going to want to wear the comfiest shoes you own. You’ll most likely be doing A LOT of walking while you’re in the parks. And if you get new tennis shoes before your trip, you might want to break those in ahead of time.
Disney offers lots of shoes to purchase in the parks, so if you like Crocs you might be able to change out of those heels into something a bit more comfy!
