We’re at Destination D23 and there has been a LOT going on.
We’ve had sneak peeks of upcoming Disney merchandise. We had a TON of announcements yesterday about Disney Parks (and we’re still trying to wrap our heads around all of it). Now, we’ve had an opportunity to learn even MORE about Disney’s upcoming animated movie Wish, PLUS we got to see Asha in person for the first time!
We were at the 100 Years of Walt Disney Animation Studios panel at Destination D23, and we got a chance to learn more about Wish. The movie follows a 17-year-old girl, Asha, and her goat Valentino. They live in Rosas, the kingdom of wishes, where wishes can REALLY come true. However, after Asha’s wishing star comes down from the sky, she gets more than she bargained for. But wait, there’s more — this movie is actually about Disney’s wishing star, the one that you see over the castle before every Disney movie. HOW COOL, right?
Wish writer Jennifer Lee and Director Chris Buck took the stage to tell us more about the movie.
We learned more about the characters, as well as the voice actors who are portraying them — there’s some SERIOUS talent here, folks. Asha is voiced by Academy Award-winning actress Ariana DeBose.
Asha’s goat, Valentino, is voiced by Alan Tudyk (yes, the voice of Hei Hei in Moana).
Then you have Star.
King Magnifico is voiced by Chris Pine.
We also got to see ASHA in real life! This is probably what she’ll look like when she starts meeting guests in several Disney Parks, including EPCOT.
Disney also shared a picture of Asha with Wish directors Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn.

We were in for a special surprise, though: we got to see the 10 minutes of the actual movie, including TWO songs! So we’re going to let you know what we saw, but we’ll warn you ahead of time if you don’t want to know what happens in the film until you see it.
Warning: The following may contain spoilers for Wish.
So the first thing we see is Asha, and she’s crying. Then she sings, “Isn’t truth supposed to set you free? Why do I feel so weighted down by it? When I speak, they tell me to sit down? How can I when I’ve already started running? I may be young, but I know I’m not wrong.” Then there’s a chorus and she continues to sing.
“Let me be the first to stand in line,” she sings. “So I make this wish. To have something more for us than this.” There are birds flying around and visually, we feel like what we saw seems very much like “Let It Go” from Frozen. Asha runs up a hill to a tree (at this point, we were getting more “Into The Unknown” vibes from Frozen 2). The background is floral and above is a starry night.
Then we see the star and it’s shining brightly. Then all the wish bubbles react. The light goes away, and we see the King say, “I believe I have just been threatened.” Asha, though, is being energized by the star, which is both playful and a little chaotic — it’s moving around Asha and getting caught in a laundry line. Asha is moving after it and trying to catch it. Its magic is bringing things to life. Then the magic gives Asha’s goat a voice. This is getting good!
Now all the other animals are given voices and they start singing, “Have you ever wondered why you look up at the sky for answers.” And they sing “You’re a star.” We’re just going to tell you now, this is THE song, the one that we are ALL going to be singing once this movie comes out. This is the Wish version of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”
We can’t show you what we saw, but we can share the movie’s trailer with you:
So that’s 10 minutes of the movie, and we’re so excited about what we saw. It seems SO magical and we can’t wait to see the whole film when it arrives in theaters on November 22nd, 2023.
