Remember how Disney announced they would start cracking down on Disney+ password sharing?
Disney announced during its Q3 Earnings Call this year that they will be working on a new plan for the streaming service, which involves determining strategies for pricing, marketing, and content to “reset the whole business around economics.” Part of that plan was looking for ways to address account sharing, and now the company is starting to crack down on password sharing in some parts of the world.
During the Q3 Earnings Call, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced a few changes for Disney+, including the release of a new ad-free bundled subscription plan that would debut in the U.S. on September 6th. In the same announcement, Iger said that Disney is “looking into ways to address account sharing,” confirming that the company was actively updating subscription agreements in the process.
Now, it looks like those changes are starting to happen in Canada. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney will “launch its password-sharing deterrents in Canada on Nov. 1, 2023.”
Disney+ subscribers in Canada have been receiving emails that notify them of new account-sharing rules. Disney’s goal is to keep the streaming platform within primary households, according to a Disney spokesperson.
The email states, “Unless otherwise permitted by your service tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household. We may, in our sole discretion, analyze the use of your account to determine compliance with this agreement. If we determine that you have violated this agreement, we may limit or terminate access to the service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this agreement.”
Apparently, Disney+ subscribers in the United States can expect to see the same password-sharing crackdown later this year or in early 2024.
This password crackdown follows closely on the heels of Netflix’s own attack on account sharing, which happened in the U.S. recently.
Disney will soon raise prices for Disney+ and Hulu in the U.S., presumably in the hopes that subscribers will move to the ad-supported tiers, which drives up advertiser revenue. The ad-free tier of Disney+ will rise to $13.99 per month starting on October 12th, 2023, but the ad-supported tier will remain the same price as before. Similarly, they will be raising the cost of Hulu without commercials to $17.99 per month — but the ad-supported version will remain at its current price.
We’ll keep watching for more updates from Disney, so stay tuned to DFB for all the latest news.

The subscription price of my Disney Plus account increased from $79 a year in 2022 to $109 a year in 2023. Can you tell me what Disney tier I am in and what am I now getting for $109? Thank you Gigi.

Hi Ron. I can’t say for sure, so please do not take this as fact or final word without contacting Disney+ to confirm, but it looks like you have the Premium subscription with no ads. You can see the subscription plans here.
