2023 is a big year for the Disney Company.
2023 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Walt Disney Company. But as we get closer to Christmas and the holidays, we thought we ought to mention that we are nearing another important anniversary within the Disney company.
We’re celebrating the 30th Anniversary of a classic Disney Christmas movie and taking a look at what its future may have in store.
Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas has become a beloved Christmas movie, but it didn’t originally start out that way. Initially, Disney was concerned that it might be too weird for audiences and labeled it under their owned Touchstone brand.
But boy were they wrong. As they realized the movie’s growing popularity, they branded it completely under the Walt Disney Studios.
The 1993 film is now celebrating its 30th birthday this year and People met up with director Henry Selick to discuss its inception and what might be in store for the classic movie’s future.
Disney adults have enjoyed this movie since its beginning, and it continues to grow in popularity, now with many sharing their favorite Christmas movie with their own kids.
So could we get a SEQUEL to the Nightmare Before Christmas? We don’t think so, as Selick essentially said, “Why mess with a classic.” At this point Selick has stated it’s “a perfect movie [that] came out of the perfect time, only to grow into something far bigger over the years.” And no one has come up with any good ideas for a sequel.
But Selick did mention that instead of a sequel for this already great movie, perhaps a prequel would be a better topic to consider. With ideas like how Jack Skellington became the King of Halloweentown, there could be a better storyline to explore before the original movie.
Chris Sarandon, who voiced Jack, has said he would “absolutely” be on board to voice him again in a potential prequel.
Only time will tell if we get to learn more about the King of Halloweentown’s history in a prequel stop-motion movie to The Nightmare Before Christmas. But we’re pretty sure that if it were to happen, there would be MANY happy Disney fans all over the world.

ONLY if Tim Burton creates it. It is His masterpiece, after all.

A prequel would be perfect! More Jack Skellington is always good, and it would be great to have a glimpse into how it all got started.

It’s amazing how much more popular this movie is today compared to when it was released. I recall seeing it upon release and how viewers thought it was very strange. It certainly wasn’t an initial hit. Nightmare Before Christmas and Hocus Pocus are two films that slowly grew in popularity and have cult followings decades after original release.
