‘Monsters’ roam Discovery Island in Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Phantom, Dracula, Mummy, Frankenstein, Wolfman, and Creature wander Animal Kingdom as swift as the night. They’re there waiting for you to come feed them with your blood…just kidding, they prefer PUMPKINS! October 26th is National Pumpkin Day and these ‘monsters’ are ready to celebrate in Animal Kingdom.
Okay, so Phantom, Dracula, Mummy, Frankenstein, Wolfman, and Creature may have monster names but actually they’re plant-eating giant Galapagos tortoises and they LOVE National Pumpkin Day. Cast Members who are the animals’ keepers in Animal Kingdom help the tortoises and other animals around the park celebrate by carving pumpkins for the herbivores to eat.
Disney’s animals have their own personal ‘chefs’ who are animal nutritionists and they prepare over 10,000 pounds of food (about the same weight as an African elephant!) down to the gram for each animal in Disney World. It doesn’t matter if it’s giraffes or spiders, they have animal ‘chefs’ ensuring they are getting a proper diet.
Imagine how long that must take to get all that food together and properly prepared for all the animals around Animal Kingdom! That cannot be an easy job.
But on October 26th, the not-so-vicious tortoises will be enjoying their very own jack-o-lantern for the special day.
These massive tortoises are among the many animals that will be enjoying over 200 pumpkins today. But unlike us, they don’t care about the whipped cream. Tortoises are herbivores so they only prefer plants. And while pumpkins are not on the Galapagos Islands, they still enjoy the seasonal treat.
They may not actually be monsters, but we would not like to put our hands between these tortoises and their pumpkin! It makes us smile knowing these guys get to enjoy Halloween as much as we do.
Leave it to the special Cast Members who go above and beyond every day at Disney to make sure all the animals are living their best lives at the park. And if you’re lucky, you may get to see some of the animals partaking in the festive day!
Keep your eyes out if you’re in Animal Kingdom for some pumpkin-loving animals enjoying their carved pumpkins!
