If the autonomy of Disney rides freaks you out a little, this news is sure to blow your socks off.
We’re in the age of artificial intelligence, and with that comes some wild new frontiers. We’ve seen it in our entertainment, in our theme parks, and now, we’re about to see it on the streets.
Per Uber, customers will now have the option of taking their ride in a fully autonomous vehicle. That’s right, you can be taxied around in a car without a driver. This new option is due to a partnership with Waymo, which is owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet. Right now, these Waymo cars are limited to Phoenix, Arizona.
These autonomous Uber rideshare vehicles will cost the same price as traditional Uber rides and guests that request rides in an UberX, Uber Comfort, Uber Comfort Electric, or Uber Green within the range of this new AI territory could be paired with an autonomous car.
Ready to roll? Your next Uber ride may be in a fully autonomous vehicle thanks to our partnership with @Waymo.
Starting today in Phoenix, customers who request a ride on the Uber app might match with the Waymo Driver.

No one could blame you if you’re hesitant to put your life in the hands of AI. This technology is still new and can be scary, but a spokesperson for Uber said that this new program has already received a lot of support from local Phoenix regulators. Fortunately, if an autonomous vehicle is selected for you, the Uber app will notify you and allow you to accept or reject the car. Those who are eager to try the autonomous cars can increase their chances of being matched if they update their preferences in the app. Uber is also supplying a 24/7 customer helpline for Waymo car passengers.
As of now, Uber has not released how many Waymo cars are being serviced in Phoenix, nor when they plan to roll out this feature in other places, such as Central Florida or Anaheim.
