Anytime Disney World does something new, it could cause controversy among fans.
There was a lot of outcry when Disney announced it was closing Splash Mountain and re-imagining the ride as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Many folks are still not happy about park pass reservations (the good news is they’re going away soon for most Disney World visitors). Genie+ is always a source of contention. There is one NEW thing in EPCOT, though, that we asked YOU, our readers, about, and it turns out, it’s not as controversial as we thought.
We went on Facebook and asked our readers the following question: “Do you think EPCOT’s new ‘Moana’ attraction has been overhyped or undersold?” We’ll admit that when you replied, we were surprised. Why? Because we expected many to say the attraction is overhyped.
However, instead, a whopping 161 of our readers, out of the 196 who commented, said that not only do they feel Journey of Water — Inspired by Moana is great, but that it’s also undersold. Say what? That’s over 82% of DFB readers!
Many of you talked about how well it fits with the educational theme that EPCOT is all about. Jordan said, “I think it fits in Epcot perfectly. Fun, beautiful, educational.” In case you don’t know, Journey of Water actually teaches visitors about the water cycle with interactive elements. We think that’s VERY EPCOT, too!
Cassandra agreed, “No it’s gorgeous & you learn while you play !!! Perfection”
Rachel said, “It’s great for kids and adults with sensory issues. My son is 23 autistic and loves it.” We love to hear that!
Justin said, “I think it’s definitely worthy of Epcot. Remember, Epcot used to be the place that was loaded with hands-on educational attractions. So if we get one that’s loaded with Disney movie theming, then I’m all for it.”
Other readers even mentioned that it won over people after they’d walked through it. Daphne said her teenage son loved it, “My family loved it! My 16 year old was water bending and that says a lot bc I have him Disney’d out. He’d rather be hanging with friends at Disney Springs, lol. So win for us!”
Y’all know how hard it is to please teenagers, right?
Melissa had a similar experience with the attraction: “Myself and my teenage boys went through it yesterday and thought it was absolutely beautiful and entertaining. We were pleasantly surprised how much we all enjoyed it.”
Others commented on how beautiful the attraction is, and it certainly is. Pro tip: If you have a chance to check it out at night, you will be STUNNED at how pretty it is.
Michael said, “I really like it; beautiful, interactive, and fun for the little ones and adults alike.”
Others appreciate how the walkthrough makes for a nice shaded and cool break in the middle of a park day. Elmar said, “I think it’s a great addition to EPCOT and it’ll be even better when the hype is a bit over. It’ll be a relaxing place nice for those really really hot days in Florida.”
We agree 100%!!!
Of those who thought it WAS overhyped, many just said the ride was a glorified splash pad. Sarah said, “Overhyped. It’s essentially a splash pad. I think it’s great for those with little ones.” Okay, so we get that little ones WILL love it, but we think if you take time to really read all the things about the cycle of water and then interact with each area, adults can appreciate it, too.
Emily pointed out some issues with the attraction: “Probably cool for kids. Definitely way overhyped, considering they’ve been working on it forever. We went through yesterday and the crowding in there was insane. Had to stand in line for each water feature and they were all pretty much the same. Some weren’t really responsive and didn’t seem to work at all.”
We can certainly see where crowds and things not working could be disappointing.
We were impressed when we got to first check it out for ourselves, and then we were impressed again when we walked through it at night. We get that Journey of Water isn’t a thrill ride — or even a ride at all — but it feels perfectly at home in EPCOT, especially with its interactivity and educational aspects.
