As we move further and further into January, we will see all the holiday and Christmas decorations slowly coming down and moving back into storage.
For those of us who LOVE Disney World at Christmas time, this is a sad occasion. It truly marks the end of the merriest time of the year. We recently found out that Disney’s Port Orleans hotel had started taking down its decorations the first week of January, which seemed very early to us (perhaps to make room for Mardi Gras decor). We wondered why it was coming down so early compared to the rest of the locations when a very friendly reader shared some interesting insight!
Thanks to our reader, Beth M., we learned a new Disney fun fact! According to Beth, a Wilderness Lodge Cast Member shared how the order of precedence is determined for which holiday decorations are put up first and torn down last!
She learned that “the putting up and taking down of decor depends on that decor’s location in storage. The WL is usually one of the last resorts to be decorated and the first to be taken down because its location in storage is near the back.”
We noticed something that could certainly point to this cool fact — The Contemporary Resort’s decorations went up way later than most places and it was one of the first spots to have it all come down this year!
It would be so interesting to walk through the super secret storage location for all the holiday decorations! However, based on the pictures, it reminds us a lot of a Lowe’s store. But still, how cool would it be to wander through here and see every single decoration for around all of Disney World?!
So if you’ve ever been curious if there is a rhyme or a reason to how places get decorated for the holidays, this could be how it all comes together. There are tons of behind-the-scenes secrets and it can be fun getting a little sneak peek into the action!

This is logical but not magical. It’s disappointing, really, because it used to be the decorations appeared suddenly in November all over WDW and disappeared like magic on January 6th, Epiphany (aka the 12th day of Christmas). I can’t say I’m sure it happened like that every year but definitely witnessed it several years in the 2000’s & 2010’s. It was so fun to get in from the park super late at night to our room at the on-property resort hotel still sparking with lights and decorated for Christmas and awake the next morning to see all the decorations had vanished. That magic compensated for the sadness of the end of the season.

Several years ago, Disney had a behind-the-scenes Holiday Tour that included the warehouses for the decorations. It also included some stops at resorts to see the decor. I’m glad now that we did it. You got a large beaded 3D Mickey Icon ornament at the end.
Disney really needs to bring back more of the tours.
