The entertainment industry had a pretty chaotic 2023.
First, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike for 148 days. During that strike, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) also went on strike — that strike lasted 118 days. The strikes upended production schedules for both movies and TV. Now, the industry is returning to normal, but that doesn’t mean that TV shows aren’t getting canceled, and now, ABC has canceled a long-running TV series.
According to Variety, the ABC series The Good Doctor will end with its seventh season. The show premiered on ABC in 2017 and was ranked as one of the TOP entertainment series in its Monday 10PM time slot in 2023 for adults ages 18-49. However, ABC has announced that the seventh and final season will debut on February 20th.
The show stars Freddie Highmore, who portrays a young autistic surgeon from a small town (where he had a troubled past) who has relocated to San Jose, CA, to work for a prestigious hospital there.
“Playing Dr. Shaun Murphy has been an immense privilege and one of the most remarkable and rewarding experiences of my life,” Highmore said. “I will always be grateful to David, Liz, and Erin as well as the hugely talented – and lovely – cast, writers, and crew who made this show possible. Caring deeply is what got us here. Thank you to Sony and ABC, and to everyone who has watched along at home. With love from Vancouver… tequila, stat!”
The Good Doctor cast also includes Chuku Modu, Richard Schiff, Will Yun Lee, Fiona Gubelmann, Christina Chang, Paige Spara, Bria Samoné Henderson, and Noah Galvin. The series’ showrunners are David Shore and Liz Friedman.
“Thanks to David Shore and Liz Friedman’s creative direction and anchored by Freddie Highmore’s performance, The Good Doctor has captivated audiences, who have deeply connected with Dr. Shaun Murphy and the staff at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital,” said Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group. “As we prepare to finish this beloved story, words cannot express our gratitude for the incredible cast, crew and our partners at Sony and ABC Signature for the lasting impact they’ve made.”
This is one of several shows that have been canceled at ABC recently. Other shows the network has recently given the axe to include The Wonder Years and Station 19. Disney has also canceled a popular Disney Channel show, as well as several Disney+ series.
We’ll keep an eye out for more TV show cancellations, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

“The Good Doctor” has had an excellent run, seven seasons. Freddie Highmore has certainly emerged as a fine talent out of his teenaged years.
I’m sure everyone concerned is pleased with the run. No need to wear out the welcome of the show– as SO MANY have done lately. Particularly the tired reboots of some dubious “hits” from the past.

How sad for us regular people. Anything good in the way of entertainment (TV) seems to go away. I’m disgusted w/ Diz these days.
It’s bad enough when us “regular” folk can no longer afford to take our children/families to any Disney Park-now our TV show choices are not our choice. Maybe they figure if they mess with all the TV shows that will come to Disney and spend money… Not!
Again, how sad.
