A brand new sports streaming service is coming to your phone and other devices soon!
A huge announcement came from the Walt Disney Company on February 6th indicating that we’ll soon get to watch the majority of sports entertainment from one streaming app! This will make life much simpler when trying to catch the latest games. Instead of needing multiple subscriptions and cable TV, you’ll soon be able to simply tune in to one app for most of your favorite games. While we know this is coming, there’s a big question mark still hanging in our minds — how much is this new streaming app going to cost us?
Disney announced that ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) are teaming up to form a joint sports streaming service that we’ll be able to use via a new app. It will contain a bundle of sports networks and show over 50% of sports content. You’ll be able to watch professional league and college-level sports right from the app.
Disney CEO, Bob Iger, stated, “The launch of this new streaming sports service is a significant moment for Disney and ESPN, a major win for sports fans, and an important step forward for the media business. This means the full suite of ESPN channels will be available to consumers alongside the sports programming of other industry leaders as part of a differentiated sports-centric service.”
With the service, you’ll be able to catch NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and other games! It will be a large sports bundle that begins cutting the cable TV service and offers more direct-to-consumer options.
At this point, we know that a Chief Executive should be announced in the coming weeks, with the service available sometime this coming fall. But unfortunately, we still don’t know how much this service will cost. The bundle of sports should be less than the cost of a cable TV bundle as the goal is “aiming to provide a new and differentiated experience to serve sports fans, particularly those outside of the traditional pay TV bundle.”
There will also be an option to bundle the new service with Disney+, Hulu, and/or Max. Since the three latter services plus ESPN+ are currently offered in a bundle for $14.99/month with ads or $24.99/month without them, we can probably expect the new bundle to be similar in price or potentially a little more given that it will offer more content than the current ESPN+.
Separately, ESPN+ is $10.99/month or $109.99/year, so this new streaming service may be in this same ballpark or slightly higher.
More pricing information is yet to be announced by Disney, Fox, and WBD. When it becomes available, you’ll have access to multiple sports networks including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNEWS, ABC, FOX, FS1, FS2, BTN, TNT, TBS, truTV, as well as ESPN+.
Fox Executive Chair and Chief Executive Officer, Lachlan Murdoch, stated, “We’re pumped to bring the FOX Sports portfolio to this new and exciting platform. We believe the service will provide passionate fans outside of the traditional bundle an array of amazing sports content all in one place.” We are looking forward to this new platform, as well!
