President’s Day weekend is here, which means many people may be traveling for the holiday.
Traveling means driving for many hours for a lot of people, and if that’s the case, it’s important to keep up with gas prices to know how much you may be spending. If you’re traveling this February, be prepared — gas prices are on the rise.
According to CNN, gas prices have increased by 11 cents in just the past week, hitting an average of $3.28 a gallon. Now, gas prices typically increase in the winter to the spring transition. As we approach springtime, demand is higher, and gas stations switch over to more expensive fuel, but there are some unexpected issues also causing prices to rise.
One of the largest refineries, located in the Midwest, has been shut down for a week, making supply more scarce. According to Andy Lipow, president of consulting firm Lipow Oil Associates, “January and February are the lowest gas demand months,” so it’s not a big surprise to see these prices rising.
If you’re driving to Disney World, or any destination that will cause you to have to fill up on gas pretty often, check out these tips below to help you save some of that gas, thanks to Progressive.
- Use Cruise Control if your car has it! It’ll help boost your gas mileage and help your gas last longer.
- Don’t speed! Faster speeds, such as between 55-75+ miles per hour, burn more fuel (but if the speed limit is 70, make sure you’re driving the speed limit!)
- Consistent speed is better than stopping and starting — AKA, highway driving is better than backroads with traffic lights and stop signs.

We “prefer” driving (sort of). We used to fly, but when AirTran was bought, that was the end of affordable, comfortable, direct flights in our area. We also used to always take Disney transpo (when we flew), but made the “mistake” of renting a car on a particularly short trip, and we were spoiled on having a car there forever. It saved so much time, and we always got a seat. Not to mention the relative ease of bringing souvenirs from the parks and Disney Springs, especially now that there is no package delivery. Between driving our own car being cheaper to begin with (even stopping for the night halfway there), and “saving money” on a rental car, and the end of the Magical Express, we just could not come anywhere close to flying again. Eventually, we fell in love with the Cabins at Fort Wilderness (you can’t beat the parking after a long day at the parks), and that was that. Even if money was no object whatsoever, I don’t think I could get comfortable with shipping all of our souvenirs back or packing them in airline handled luggage (we tend to go for longer visits now rather than visits every year, so there’s quite a bit). So it’s driving, for us, for the foreseeable future…

The refinery capacity in the USA has been going down for a number of years. Shell shutdown it’s Convent Louisiana refinery, and LyondellBasell shutdown it’s Houston refinery, and they want be the last. Higher gasoline prices are here to stay.
