We got some unexpected big Disney news today, folks! It has us feeling a bit sad, too.
Back in 2001, Disney introduced a service called the Disney Movie Club. This was a subscription-based service that would deliver the latest Disney film to your door each month, usually along with exciting extras like pins and posters. However, after over two decades of service, the Disney Movie Club is coming to an end.
According to Variety, Disney has now outsourced a large portion of their home entertainment division to Sony Pictures Entertainment, who will handle the marketing, selling, and distributing of all of Disney’s “new releases and catalog titles on physical media to consumers through retailers and distributors in the U.S. and Canada.”
So why is the Disney Movie Club ending? Well, sales for physical DVDs and Blu-Ray copies of films and TV shows have been declining for quite some time — dropping 28% in the first half of 2023, to be specific, according to The Digital Entertainment Group. This is also why Best Buy discontinued the sale of DVDs and Blu-Rays in stores and online early in 2024.
If you’re a Disney Movie Club member, the last day to order anything will be May 20th, 2024. Accounts will be closed automatically on July 20th, 2024, and the last day to return films will be September 20th, 2024. However, to honor members’ loyalty over the years, the club will be releasing tons of perks to help collectors finish out their collections before the final day of sale.
While this isn’t necessarily a surprise, it is a sad day for movie fans who have cherished the Disney Movie Club throughout their childhoods, or their kids’ childhoods. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all the latest news as it comes out, so stay tuned to DFB.

I guess the points we have to purchase things like a visit to Walt Disney Studios will go away. Very sad
