One of the best parts of staying at a Disney World hotel is taking advantage of Disney’s FREE transportation.
You can get to almost ANYWHERE on Disney World property by using an expansive transportation system that includes the monorail, the Skyliner, boats, and that good old standby, Disney buses. Well, if you’ll be taking a Disney bus around the resort anytime soon, you might notice some CHANGES.
We were visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge recently and saw a bus pulling up to the hotel that looked shiny and new. That’s because it WAS! Disney just got some new buses! A Cast Member told us that there are about 40 of these on the road right now as of about a month ago.
The new modular seating can accommodate three ECVs or wheelchairs (previously, it was only two), meaning these buses are now more accessible for a greater number of people.
We also confirmed that these are entirely NEW buses and not just old buses that have been modified. Check this out, too: the buses have charging ports EVERYWHERE, including on folding seats. So you can charge your phones while riding the bus. They’re also designed to accommodate more people standing on them (which isn’t the ideal bus scenario, but sometimes, you gotta stand). Also, the driver we met, Craig, told us the new bus “drives real nice.”
We also asked the driver if he thought these would become the new Disney bus standard, and he seemed to think it was likely and that we’ll eventually see the older buses phased out. Note Disney has not officially confirmed this news, but we’ll keep our eyes out for updates. Who knows, your next Disney bus ride might be a lot different!

I am riding on one now! I love that they accommodate 3 scooters, because my husband and I both use them and sometimes have to either split up or wait for the next bus if there is a scooter or wheelchair already waiting. This is so convenient!

I’m surprised that Disney hasn’t gone the route of acquiring electric buses yet.

I love riding the buses at WDW. Its just part of the experience. My family loves waiting for them each morning. Some good memories have taken place on these buses.

On my last day I was able to ride one of the new buses. I also use an ECV and the driver was really excited to show me how it it worked. I felt very secure. The only disadvantage was I was facing the rear of the bus, so I couldn’t see where we were going only where we’ve been. 🙂 They are a great addition to the bus service.

Oh YAY. Pretty soon there will be NO seats so EVERYONE can travel dangerously. Way to go Disney!!

Testing new buses when we were there in Jan. Bus driver said the only set back is basket on back and overhead canopy must be removed.
Ryan says
Any chance they will increase the number of buses so the wait times can decrease, especially at peak transit times?

I love that they’re new. Plenty of medical access. Unfortunately if you sit in the fold down seats they’re quite low and when in motion you tend to slide off as there are no arms or poles to hold. There are hand straps but they are hard to reach since seats are lower. Also unless you’re small or short legged, sitting in part of the back row is impossible due to proximity of the other seats. Plenty of standing room.
