Spring break is typically held in March for colleges around the country. While Disney World is a common vacation spot, there are a few other favorite spring break destinations.
Beaches have always seemed to be the go-to for spring breakers. You may travel to a beautiful Florida beach such as Panama City Beach or even the Florida Keys. Alternatively, many young adults find themselves on the beaches of Mexico as they take a break from their classes and homework. However, if you’re traveling to Mexico, the U.S. Embassy has recently released a travel message for those headed there for spring break.
A message from the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Mexico shares information for traveling smart on your spring break to Mexico. Of course, most people who travel to Mexico do so safely and without problems, however, it’s always important to be informed about potential issues that may arise during your trip.
A list of things to consider was added to the message for U.S. citizens who may be traveling to Mexico for spring break. This list includes the following:
- Crime — Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico.
- Drugs — Drug possession and use, including medical marijuana, is illegal in Mexico.
- Unregulated Alcohol — Unregulated alcohol may be contaminated
- Pharmaceuticals — Counterfeit medication is common and may be ineffective, have the wrong strength, or be contaminated.
- Sexual Assault — U.S. citizens have been victims of sexual assault in Mexico.
- Drowning — Some beaches have strong undercurrents and rip tides, but may lack lifeguards, warnings, or signs of unsafe conditions.
- Medical Emergencies — Private hospital prices can be higher than those in the United States. Â Many facilities require payment (sometimes only in cash) either before providing treatment or before discharging a patient.
- Guns and Ammunition — All guns and even small amounts of ammunition are illegal in Mexico.
- Arrests — Drunk and disorderly behavior, public urination, and open alcohol containers are illegal in Mexico.
- Immigration — Violating the terms of your stay in Mexico can result in steep fines and detention.
To prevent any of these issues from befalling you on spring break, the U.S. Embassy suggests taking certain actions such as being familiar with travel advisories and country information, to include entry requirements. You can enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program before leaving to get up-to-date information on safety conditions in Mexico. The program also helps the U.S. Embassy contact you during an emergency.
More actions to take include:
- Ensuring your health insurance covers treatment in Mexico.
- Avoid strong currents and do not swim after drinking or when unsafe conditions are posted.
- Drink responsibly and always watch your drink.
- Stay with your group of companions that you know.
- Monitor your credit or debit card accounts
- Stay alert while on public transportation and watch your possessions.
- Keep friends and family at home informed of your travel plans
- If traveling to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, or other areas in the state of Quintana Roo, consider using the “Guest Assist” app provided by the Mexican government.
- Keep your passport and entry permit in a safe place.
Springbreakers aren’t the only ones who need to be cautious. If you’re heading out on a Disney cruise soon, these are also good reminders for you as well on your vacation. Many cruise destinations are in Mexico or the Bahamas (where other travel advisories have gone into effect), so regardless of whether you’re a spring breaker or going on a cruise, be sure to be alert and travel smart.
That’s a lot of information, but essentially, have a plan and stay alert during your travels. If you do have issues while in Mexico, contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate if you need assistance. Most people have a great time on their spring break trips to Mexico. Follow the U.S. Embassy’s guidance to stay safe and have fun!
