Disney has been criticized in recent years by some fans and parents for pushing what they claim is a “woke agenda,” by discussing content that touches on LGBTQIA+ and gender identity-related themes.
CEO Bob Iger has shared his thoughts on the matter which garnered criticism of their own, but has previously said that Disney is “committed to delivering age-appropriate content for family audiences while also telling stories that reflect the world around us and that foster greater understanding, greater perspective, greater acceptance of all people.” And, one Disney actor thinks the first queer princess could be in development soon.
In a March 2024 interview with ComicBook.com, Disney actor Harvey Guillén said he was “optimistic” that we could soon see the first queer Disney princess. Guillén, known for roles in What We Do in the Shadows and Disney’s Wish, thinks “we are in the life span of that potentially happening.”
He continued, “I think they’re making strides in the right direction,” speaking of Disney’s representation of the LGBTQIA+ community.
“I think it’s hard to rebuild a wheel that’s already been in motion for a while, and it’s hard to think of a new direction, especially in where we’re at with the world, but they’re putting their best foot forward, I think. And sometimes those things take time and I’m optimistic. And like you said, if a queer princess comes along, that’d be fantastic,” Guillén shared.
But, as of now, no official announcements from Disney have been made about plans for the first LGBTQIA+ princess. With Disney’s efforts to bolster its inclusion standards throughout the company, it’s possible that Guillén is correct and we could sometime soon, though.
However, Disney would have to contend with the potential backlash from those who have criticized the company in the past. Even CEO Bob Iger found himself in some hot water after making comments on the future of Disney movies.
Despite Iger’s previous comments about wanting Disney films and shows to “foster greater understanding, greater perspective, greater acceptance of all people,” he later stated that the creators at Disney had “lost sight” of what their jobs should be — that it should be to “entertain first” and not be about “messages.”
Iger continued that he’s ready to share more original Disney stories to entertain, instead of “pushing an agenda.” One thing is for sure, we’ll be on the lookout for any potential updates about new Disney movies or princesses!

Rylie says
Disney’s been struggling from all these work ideas, yet they keep pushing these agendas anyway. Making a queer or LGBT princess is gonna cause lots of controversy. Whatever they do, please for the love of humanity, DON’T MAKE ELSA LGBTQ. Elsa doesn’t need a romantic partner. Keep her single. If you’re gonna make a gay or queer princess, make a new one.
Amber says
No,No,No this is not what Disney is about. They are going in the wrong direction on this one.
Wendy Snelgrove says
As a lesbian, I would love a queer princess. I think they already have one, because I think they’ve written Elsa as asexual, to be honest.
Would love to see Riley (Inside Out) developed as a queer character.
Lucretia Kleinman says
I think Rylie meant “woke” and I agree, there will be a lot of criticism. How old are the Imagineers? Come up with some good story ideas. I long for the Disney movies of the past. Go back to Grimes’ Fairy Tales and find an interesting story to make a movie out of.
Coral Schober says
This is wrong in so many ways!!! It is up to us as parents and grandparents to teach our children about tolerance and acceptance of those who are different from us. Pushing the “woke” agenda is not Disney’s place!
GL Josh says
I do agree with Rylie, I have always thought that Else would be a great candidate more of a single’s life. She hasn’t had any real romance in the first two movies and technically is an elemental force (her sneezes make sentient lifeforms). She could just be a strong Independant single woman.
Loranne says
Families do not want the LGBTQ agenda pushed on their CHILDREN. It is an adult issue. When will Disney get this? Even now, parents no longer trust Disney and are screening content before letting their children view it. There was a time when the Disney name was attached to any type of film genre, families would confidently sit down and watch, but not anymore. The most successful IP Disney owns simply entertains.

🤦♀️🫣😳🤪🤯😂🤭
Judy Perkins says
There are people who want to be entertained by movies, but the vulgar language, not-so-hidden agendas, and lack of an interesting story keep them at home scanning the old movie channels. And now even Disney feels the need to jump into the swamp. Why?!
Traci says
just won’t stop with the woke. all they want is everybody’s money so Disney is going to try to please every agenda they can. “look how we care about you” while Iger’s hand is in your pocket.
Robin says
I don’t think this is going to go over too well. I personally think we need to let kids be kids and stop making them some political pawn. Go back to the days of Lion King, Pinocchio, Cinderella and such. Not every movie needs to be a political statement for goodness sake.
June says
Enough already. Enough.
Jeffrey says
Why? Just why? Doesn’t Disney see how the woke agenda is separating this country? Why would they want to bring more controversy to the Disney name? Didn’t they see how the woke remakes fell short? The only way they are staying profitable is by constantly raising park prices and taking away things that use to be included in the price of admission and making you pay to get them back. Don’t they actually read the surveys they give out? People are not happy with Disney the way they use to be. When will they open their eyes? Is this actually the way Walt envisioned his legacy to be? I understand being inclusive, but not at the expense of alienating others. Everyone was always welcomed at Disney, but now they just seem to be catering to just the woke. Just my opinion though…

Guaranteed to bomb at the box office.
