At this point, it’s hardly a secret that Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is getting some new Disney Vacation Club villas.
These new DVC villas will be housed in a brand NEW building at the Polynesian Village Resort, and we’ve been carefully watching the construction to get an idea of what the final project will look like. However, there has been some concern that the Villas don’t look the way people expect…but we want you to hear us out.
Right now, the villas are under construction, and they look pretty industrial and gray. We know that can be disappointing, especially when you consider the rest of the awesome theming at the Polynesian Village Resort. We’ve heard from lots of fans who are worried this building will be an eyesore!
HOWEVER, last time we checked, we noticed that some paint was already going up on some of the buildings and it was a more light brown natural color, which fits the Polynesian Village Reosrt’s vibe.
Well, when we checked recently, even MORE of the new building was painted that natural color. So if you were worried that Disney was going to just leave those grayish walls up, that’s not what’s happening.
We also can’t get over the full SCOPE of the project. This construction site and the building are far larger than we even initially thought it would be. That is a LOT more rooms for Disney World hotel guests.
For comparison, we’re going to show you the concept art. This is what the final product will look like. The angled roofs, wood tones, and greenery surrounding the building make it fit in pretty well with the rest of the resort. We’ve just got to keep this final image in mind and ignore the big, gray block that’s currently in its place!
Y’all — it’s starting to look a lot closer to that original art. Keep in mind that none of the foliage in the concept art has been planted yet — that will come later. That will also help transform this new building into something worthy of the Polynesian.
So although you might be a little worried that this new building will NOT fit in well, we’ll have to wait and make our final judgement when it’s finished! It’s expected to open by the end of this year.
Interestingly enough, a lot of the inspiration for this building, at least according to Imagineers, has come from early concepts of the Polynesian Village Resort. The idea is that they want to honor the past while continuing to work with the existing resort theme. We trust the Imagineers — they know what they’re doing!
We’ll continue to keep an eye on the construction progress at the site and keep you updated, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

It looks like it’s going to be amazing!

The Poly is usually so nice a quiet very relaxed atmosphere but I’m afraid that won’t be the case anymore. That monstracity is blocking views as well. One of the perks of taking the monorail are the views.

We are DVC members with the Polynesian as one of our home resorts. We are looking forward to staying at the new Villas. The DVC Studio rooms in the original Polynesian Resort are fantastic and represent an excellent value for their size, location, and theming for DVC members. Anyone know if these new Villas will be under a new contract such that existing DVC Poly Owners will be limited to a 7 month booking window?
Charles says
Wow, from the pictures it looks like you’ll be able to stand out on one of the balconies and wave at your friends staying at Grand Flo.
I’m betting we’ll hear something about or near Port Orleans soon. Coronado got a tower, Caribbean got a Skyliner and a Deluxe/DVC tower neighbor, the Cabins got upgraded.
When are they going to give us a new Value? Fans would lose their minds, and I have no doubts they would have zero problems filling it.
Vicki says
We recently stayed at the Contemporary and could see the addition from our balcony. Then we passed it a few times when we took the Monorail. It is coming along nicely. Looks like a very nice place. Can’t wait to see the finished product.

It was a bad idea from the start. It’s an eyesore and will be an eyesore. A great transition between properties has been eliminated. No structure on Poly property should be taller than the Grand Ceremonial House. This was nothing other than a simple fix to resolve the DVC mistake at Poly that only included studios (not counting the bungalows). The infrastructure was already there including Disney transportation so it was an easy project for DVC. Sadly we are going to forever have to look at the eyesore.

Very disappointed the new Polynesian building looks like a Hampton Inn
Norma says
We need more value and moderate resorts, not expensive rooms and DVD rooms. You can’t put lipstick on the bride of Frankenstein and expect a beauty. These new hotels with several floors are ugly and take away from the initial resort and its appeal. This goes for other resorts too, like Coronado. Iger and the Board simply have no respect for Walt’s vision or what wdw guests like. It’s time to start speaking with our wallet. Walt originally created Disneyland for the average, middle-class family and meant WDW to be the same. But that’s not how it is anymore. Very sad that they just don’t get it!

As I have read in DVC News and on DFB the new building will be a part of our Poly contracts and we will be able to book at 11 month. How they are going to set the two apart in point is not known at this time. Since I’m sure there will be studios in both, how you will get your studio in the new building. Well your guess is as good as ours, just have to wait for the new point charts to come out.

I do agree with one point made by Norma, that Bob Iger and other senior Disney leaders have lost Walt’s vision for the parks to be affordable for everyday working families. I would extend this notion to Walt’s artistic vision and attention to detail also. Disney Execs have lost that too, or never had it. Several of the resort remodeling projects have resulted in “de theming” of the resort, in favor of a more generic Marriott look. I like the Marriott, just not to replace a classic and well appointed Disney themed resort. Maybe the new senior Imagineering leader can turn this around or even re do some of the poorly conceived changes. I am most critical of some of the changes at the Boardwalk, my favorite place to stay at WDW, as it’s new decor is not in keeping with a circa 1900 Northeastern beach resort. The changes to the Bel View Lounge are criminal. I have not seen the new Boadwalk Villas yet. Walt was correct when discussing the need for intricate details and high quality during the
construction of Disneyland. Walt stated, “Our customers can feel excellence.” Yes, Mr. Iger, Walt was right about this too.
Stephen says
Yes, many of us have expressed great concern about this project. It’s not good. It looks like a generic condo building from anywhere. It overshadows the Polynesian Resort and is a blemish on the landscape. This is probably the worst thing DIsney has built in the past 20-years.
