There are over 25 Disney World hotels to choose from when you visit the parks for your vacation.
These hotels are split into three categories based on price and the amenities they offer — Value, Moderate, and Deluxe. While staying on property isn’t required to have a wonderful vacation in Disney World, many guests find staying on property to be easier, more efficient, and a great way to stay immersed in the magic. Just like the rest of the resort, Disney is always trying to make sure their hotels are up-to-date, which is why we’re wondering if they’ll start implementing this new trend.
We’ve been made aware of a new trend happening in the hotel world thanks to a new article by The New York Times. It’s called Sleep Tourism, and is focused on solving the issues many people in the United States face with getting a good night’s sleep…but while they’re on vacation.
Many people have sleep problems, whether it’s due to medical issues such as sleep apnea, stress, PTSD, a less than ideal work schedule — the list goes on and on. Regardless of the reason, many hotels have seen this as a business opportunity — if people are struggling to get a good night’s sleep in their home, why not make a vacation include resources to help them sleep better?
And we’re not just talking about comfy mattresses and pillows. Some hotels are now implementing things such as:
- On-call hypnotherapists
- A.I. assisted beds (we didn’t realize that was possible, but here we are)
- Spa services dedicated to assisting with sleep
- “Cocooning” in a space that can be cut off from the rest of the room and made to feel dark and cozy
So now that we know many large hotels are beginning to try out ways to implement Sleep Tourism into their rooms and the experience their guests have, is this something we may see Disney start to add to their hotels? Well, anyone who’s been to Disney World knows that it’s essential to get a good night’s sleep to prepare for a busy day in the parks, but simultaneously, sleeping isn’t exactly anyone’s first priority in Disney World.
Yes, it’s important to take a resort day and sleep in if you’re spending more than 4 days in Disney World, but most of the excitement happens within the parks! Many Disney hotels already have Hey, Disney!, which is an Alexa-like device that can assist you with many things, including reading a bedtime story to help your kids fall asleep, or soundscapes to help you relax. In general, we have a really hard time imagining people choosing to travel all the way to Disney World just to focus on getting better sleep through Sleep Tourism.
That’s not to say Disney won’t add some of these features to their Deluxe resorts, club-level rooms, or suites! It could be an added bonus for guests already paying that higher price tag for the room, but as it stands, Disney World hotels (at least, most of them) aren’t known for having thick walls that keep the sounds of other guests out. So Disney would likely have to build a whole new hotel, or new sections onto existing hotels.
At the end of the day, we don’t know if Disney World is the right spot for Sleep Tourism, but there are plenty of other hotel additions and construction that’s been going on in recent months to bring existing hotels up to date. You can now check out the new room updates at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn Villas, we should see the new addition to Disney’s Polynesian Resort open this year, and Fort Wilderness is getting all new cabins this summer!

I always try to remember our white noise machine and that really helps. But in Feb we were at Carribean Beach and I forgot it! After hearing the Skyliner chimes in the morning — I used an app on my phone. It really helps on those mornings you’d like to sleep a little later. Or go back to sleep after booking your first Lightening Lane. 🙂
