If you’ve ever felt awkward at Disney World, YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Don’t get us wrong, a trip to Disney World will most likely be filled with good times, fond memories, (hopefully) some excellent food, and lots of smiles. But at some point, YOU WILL feel awkward — it’s unavoidable!
We visit the Disney World Parks every day, so it’s only natural we’ve experienced an uncomfortable amount of awkwardness. Here are seven things that happen at Disney World that will never stop being awkward!
Body Odor
You know what we’re talking about. It’s a hot summer day and you’re inches from the next person, either walking around the parks or jammed into the sardine can of a ride queue. You get to know your neighbors’ smells very quickly. The situation is made more awkward if you’re the one omitting the odor…
Using the Chicken Exits
You tried so hard and got so far, but in the end, it didn’t even matter. You thought you would have the courage to ride a more intense ride but couldn’t stomach it enough to actually see it through. Or maybe a last-second emergency drew you out of the queue. Either way, taking a chicken exit, a pathway that leads out of the ride queue and serves as a ride exit, can be incredibly awkward. Stop staring at me — I tried my best!
Getting In and Out of Rides
Whether you’re trying to awkwardly get seated on TRON Lightcycle / Run, or squishing your body onto Space Mountain, getting in and out of some Disney World rides can be a pain. Not to mention you have to find space for your belongings, make sure the safety bar doesn’t squish you to death, survive a bumpy ride, and finally crawl out of the ride vehicle while shifting your clothes and trying not to fall flat on your face. The end-of-the-ride photos never accurately depict the struggle, do they?
Meeting Characters
Meeting characters is an amazing experience — when you’re a kid. Meeting characters as an adult at Disney World can be awkward for a couple of reasons. The first is as an adult you may no longer have the suspension of disbelief. Sure, meeting them is cute and all, but you’re here for the rides and food, not necessarily small talk. The character actors can be very funny and charming, easing interactions, but the real awkwardness can set in when you meet characters that don’t speak. You’re basically just standing there talking to yourself.Â
The other side of the coin is when you’re more excited than the kids to meet the characters. There’s no shame in that, but it can still feel awkward.
Carrying Food on a Tray
So you’ve stacked up food and drinks on a tray and now you have to find somewhere to sit. Everywhere you look is taken and now you’re just wandering around looking for a spot. All of a sudden the tray starts to get a little heavy. And now you’re trying not to spill your drinks everywhere. On top of that, you can now feel every muscle in your legs as you inch a few futile steps here and a few futile steps there. Yeah, carrying a tray full of food and drinks around while you aimlessly search for seating is super awkward.
Tantrums
It doesn’t matter if it’s your kiddos or someone else’s — listening to a child throw a tantrum may be the most awkward thing that can happen at Disney World. From the screaming and kicking to the defeated look on a parent’s face or their last-ditch efforts to control the situation, tantrums are no fun for anyone within hearing distance. Hang in there!
Walking Around Soaked
So you got on a water ride without a poncho or change of clothes. First off, our condolences. Walking around Disney World after getting soaked on a water ride can be extremely awkward. Your shoes are making that squishy noise and everyone is giggling at how damp your hair and clothes are. It’s just another reminder to ride prepared next time!

My wife gets self conscious while loading unloading from a ride due to her MS symptoms.
Still able to remember a time when she could stand by herself and walk, her slowing other guests really bothers her.
On the subject of aromas, try wheel chair travel at derrière level.

A few years ago we were having dinner at La Hacienda de San Angel restaurant at a table along the windows facing the World Showcase Lagoon. The couple at the next table to pacify their two children, approximately 6 to 8, allowed then to sit on the floor under the table to eat their meal. Unbelievable!

Sitting at a table, eating our meal, the couple at the next table allowing their two young children to sit on the floor under the table to eat their meal. Unbelievable!
