Don’t worry, the word “Magic” is safe and sound!
You may be used to Disney words like “rope drop” and “Disneybounding”, but don’t expect to see Disney adopt a very popular “M-Word” into its dictionary!
So what is this “M-Word”? Metaverse, of course! This month, The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger held a Q&A at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, & Telecom Conference and, in it, revealed the company wants to move away from the term “metaverse” altogether.
In February, Disney announced a partnership with Fortnite creator Epic Games and a major step into the video game sector. The partnership will create a game that will include characters from Disney films and shows like Star Wars, MARVEL, Pixar, Avatar, and Indiana Jones. The game will combine Fortnite gameplay and characters to deliver a fleshed-out Disney universe that emphasizes gameplay, entertainment, and shopping. Disney said that this new venture “represents our biggest foray into the game space ever.”
If you think this new virtual world sounds like a metaverse, YOU’RE RIGHT! Iger said he wants to move away from the word “metaverse” because he wants to abandon the cliche while Disney tries to separate itself from the rest of the metaverse competition. Instead, the Disney CEO references this new experience simply as a “UNIVERSE”. Iger alluded to the word “metaverse” as something that is thrown around too often.
This new “universe” is expected to roll out a few years from now and will utilize The Walt Disney Company’s extensive IP collection to engage consumers and create new games. In the meantime, we’ll continue to bring you updates on this new universe and all things Disney, so stay tuned here at DFB for all the latest!

Let’s face it. The “metaverse” appellation was coined primarily (in the film world) to EXCUSE the remaking of superhero movies. The only time it really works for me is in last Spiderman movie starring Tom Holland that brought back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, the “Spideys” from the previous iterations.
