Walt Disney once said that “Disneyland will never be completed”, and the same goes for Disney World!
There are times when Disney World has walls everywhere (we are talking about you EPCOT), or when a ride closes for refurbishment. The parks are always changing and new experiences are coming, but what about the mysterious buildings that are around the parks?
Sometimes, Disney can keep a project secret, But we have started to notice more new mysterious buildings as well as old buildings in the parks and they make us start to wonder what they could be used for!
Toy Story Land Building
Toy Story Land opened in 2018, and when it opened there was a piece of the land missing and a building that sat un-opened. That building later turned into Roundup Rodeo BBQ, but now there is a new building on the horizon in Toy Story Land.
Near the exit of Toy Story Mania, there has been construction on a new building. This area of the land has already seen some changes with the opening of Jessie’s Trading Post, but this building is brand new.
This new building can also be seen near Woody’s Lunchbox. Cast members have suggested to us that this building could be an additional kitchen facility needed to support the restaurants in Toy Story Land.
If that’s not the case, though, could this be an additional seating area? It can be hard to find a spot to eat at Woody’s Lunchbox or even just a shady place to sit in Toy Story Land. Could this new structure provide an indoor seating area for people to cool off and eat in?We still are unsure, but it would be nice for Toy Story Land to gain additional seating and an escape from the sun.
Harambe Market Building
When we visited Animal Kingdom, we noticed some construction over in the Africa section of the park near Harambe Market. At first construction walls went up and narrowed the walkway.
Last summer when they first appeared we asked a Cast Member what was going on, and they said that they were not sure but just figured that Disney was touching up this area of the park and giving it some TLC.
Now, a new building has started to be seen beyond the walls! Disney has not said what this building will be used for, but like Toy Story Land, we wonder if this will be used as additional seating.
This building would be another great area for people to be able to find additional seating in either a shaded or air conditioned space. Until Disney either says something or opens the mysterious building, we are not 100% sure of what the space will be used for.
Wonders of Life Pavilion
Have you ever been walking in EPCOT and noticed a gold dome? That dome was home to the Wonders of Life Pavilion, which closed back in 2007. This building briefly would open back up during certain festivals. Back in 2019 at Disney’s fan convention, D23 Expo, it was announced that this abandoned pavilion would get a makeover!
This old pavilion would be turned into the PLAY! Pavilion as part of the EPCOT transformation. This area was supposed to open in 2021 but was pushed back. It was still part of the EPCOT Experience preview film, and you were able to get a look into what might be featured in this area.
Unfortunately, in 2023 the PLAY! Pavilion was removed from the EPCOT park map. The status of this pavilion is still unknown, and it is on an indefinite hold. We hope that Disney is able to build the PLAY! Pavilion or put something new in its place — as the Wonders of Life Pavilion has been abandoned for years.
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser
When Disney announced that the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser would take its last voyage back in September of 2023, people were curious about what Disney would end up doing with this space.
This hotel has an entrance that leads into Galaxy’s Edge. This makes us wonder if Disney would consider re-opening the hotel for day excursions. It would be cool to be able to spend a half day aboard the Halcyon!
This experience could possibly include either lunch or dinner and Lightsaber training! Or maybe additional entertainment and character experiences could be added for people to enjoy.
We hate to see this building sit abandoned. Many people are hopeful that Disney will open up an experience that would allow people to step aboard the Halcyon for a smaller cost. Until Disney makes an announcement, the fate of the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is unknown.
The NBA Experience
The NBA Experience (previously DisneyQuest) closed at Disney Springs in August of 2021. The experience opened in August of 2019 and was forced to close in March of 2020 due to the pandemic. The Experience never re-opened after the parks re-opened and has sat abandoned since.
Recently, we have seen workers near the NBA Experience building and we were wondering if the building could potentially be welcoming a new experience. In February of 2024, Disney filed a permit for demolition at the NBA Experience.
This permit does not necessarily mean that the building would be demolished, but maybe the inside of the building could be gutted.
This building is huge and can fit a lot in it! We hope this space could be used for an interactive Disney experience. Could a new version of DisneyQuest go in this space? Could Disney use this as an indoor entertainment venue? There are so many possibilities, but until Disney announces something, the future of this building is up in the air.
With two mystery buildings and three abandoned buildings, Disney has a lot of potential new spaces in the works. We hope that Disney will release more information soon and we can see what new experiences might be on the horizon!
